sam had left my room soon after i agreed to go out with him. i was in a state of pure confusion but i didn't really have any time to think over it.

slipping out of my bed i put on my clothes from earlier but threw my north face puffer over the top too since it was the middle of september and was fucking freezing at night.

after clipping my long blonde hair up i crept out of my room and down the stairs. dean, drew and joe were all passed out in the lounge so i thought this was my perfect time to leave. slipping on my trainers i clicked the front door shut and was met with sams face.

"you ready?" he smiled, he too was in a big puffer.

we walked down the hill in mostly silence, i took in the view around me. shields was beautiful anyway, but at night it was even more beautiful.

after a few more moments of silence, i spoke up.

"you know, for someone who got so mad at me for going out at night, your sure taking me out quite late"

"yeah well i'm not a dickhead like the people you go out with, cameron, callum, carl is it?" he spoke confidently, keeping his eyes forward.

"it's connor"

"connor," sam spoke simply, stopping as we reached the top of the beach, "and are you in love with this connor?"

"what? no! i mean.."

sam didn't say a word, only raised his eyebrows before he continued to walk further down the beach, me following promptly.

as we reached the edge of the beach sam slipped off his puffer, handing it to me.

"sam i'm flattered but i don't want your coat"

"use it to sit on then."

i considered it for a moment, it was definitely chilly and i didn't want to take my own coat off, "fine."

the two of us sat down as i watched the tide slowly wash in and out, it must've only come in just a metre away from where we were sat. the night was very clear too, i could've counted hundreds of stars.

we sat in silence again for a while, it didn't really feel awkward however, just a comfortable silence. i still didn't want to make eye contact though, so i kept my stare on the pier or on the sea.

"cassie"

"sam"

"what are you thinking about?"

god was this boys voice dreamy.
no he's not dreamy, cassie stop it.

"nothing much, you?"

"nowt"

silence again.

"so, sam, how's the music coming along?"

"it's good actually, we're working on the new album at the moment" he nodded, looking at me with a face searching for some sort of approval.

"oh my god sam that's amazing! dean never told me?"

"yeah, we want to keep it on the down low for now, you know how quickly shit spreads."

"yeah of course"

"so," sam began with a smug grin, "do you listen to any of our music at all or nowt ?"

"well sam i mean how could i not when it's all i hear from downstairs every single night," i laughed, causing him to give a fake-shocked face, "i'm kidding i'm kidding, i'm not gonna say i don't ever put it on."

"ah really? well that's a surprise."

"it is?"

"yeah for sure."

he watched my eyes closely, giving me an honest grin, before we both looked down again as i fiddled with my laces.

suddenly, a ping on my phone rang out interrupting the silence. picking it up i saw it was connor, lots of messages from him all appearing at once.

cassie

im sorry

where are you?

cassie?

fuck you then.

"fuck sake" i muttered at the sight of the dozens of messages i had received from connor, after a moment of considering replying, i unzipped my coat pocket and put it inside there so it wouldn't keep bugging me. i definitely was not in the mood right now.

as if he could see through my phone, sam spoke up,
"look cass i really think we should talk about what i saw the other night?"

"and what was that, sam?" i decided to play dumb, i wasn't able to see how this involved him.

"like who was that boy who had you pushed against the wall, and where was your boyfriend whilst this was happening?" his accent ran even thicker than usual, he spoke like he really did care.

"i really don't see how this is any of your business"

"it's my business because your my best friends little sister and i'm the one who saw it happen, i need to look out for you."

i didn't reply however, i wasn't in the mood to explain me and connors relationship to any body, especially sam. it was way too complicated, and the truth was i didn't even know myself.

"sam if this is the only reason you got me to come out, i'm gonna go home" i said as i got up and dusted the sand off my joggers. however just before i took a step sam shot up too, wrapping his hand around my wrist.

"no, stay" he said, his blue eyes became lit by the moons reflection, staring into my brown ones.

it felt like time had sort of stopped. i wasn't aware of the waves anymore, or the stars, just sam's desperation for me not to leave. it confused the hell out of me to say the least, why did he care so much all of the sudden?

before i could respond, two voices sounded from behind sam. two girls were stood there who proceeded to tell sam they were big fans and asked him for a picture.

"do you mind taking it?" one of the girls asked me shyly, holding out her phone.

"of course i can" i smiled thinly, taking a few steps back as i took a couple of pictures, sam in the middle with his arms around both the girls.

"thank you so much" they both smiled before taking the phone and running away.

as they left sam looked back to me, his smile had turned pretty sheepish and i knew i couldn't leave now.
