In the dark

A few weeks went by, and things at home were great. Caity and Lizzie were getting along pretty well. Lizzie was feeling a bit better, and she was searching for an apartment, or a small house to live in. Of course, I was helping her, but deep down, I didn't want her to leave. I liked it when she was near me, it made me feel better.

"What are you thinking about?" Caity asked as she stood in the doorframe.

"Nothing" I lied. She walked in, and sat next to me on my bed.

"Why is it so hard for you to say, baby? You still love her, don't you?" she asked placing a comforting hand on my knee.

"It's just that since, she's here I feel... complete, again" I hesitantly admitted.

"You got that look in your eyes, every time she walks into the room... I kinda wish someone would look at me this way" Caity smiled at me.

"Jes does" I smirked, changing the topic.

"No she doesn't, don't start with this again" she playfully nudged my shoulder. Jes Macallan is one of Caity's coworkers. They play a couple on a show, and I know Caity has a not so secret crush on her. I noticed how they look at each other off screen, and it's very obvious that the feelings are reciprocal.

After that conversation, Caity called Brie and Scarlett. They both came over with, of course, alcohol, and food. Lizzie joined us in the living room, we started to have some drinks, and talk about pretty much nothing and everything.

"We should go out" I said out of nowhere "like somewhere where we can dance, and sing" I offered. Brie knew exactly where I wanted to go. We took our cars, Brie and Scarlett were in the same one, and I was with Caity and Lizzie. We drove to a beach bar, which also turned out to be a karaoke bar.

A few minutes after we arrived, Jes joined us. Caity looked at me, and I whispered to her "I texted her, and told her to join us. You're welcome" earning a thankful smile from my friend.

Caity and Jes went to get some drinks, Brie and Scarlett were already singing like drunk idiots, even though we barely had a couple drinks. So, maybe just idiots. Which left me alone with Lizzie, and after a few seconds she broke the silence.

"I found a house" she spoke, worryingly waiting for my reaction.

"Oh, that's great! Where?" I pretended to be happy about it, but I could tell I wasn't very convincing.

"Near Brie's neighbourhood" she simply answered.

"Sounds great. But, you don't have to leave so soon, you can take all the time you need" I spoke, without knowing how she would take it.

"That's sweet, but I think Caity's getting tired of having me around" she chuckled.

"Caity's gonna move out soon anyway..." I sadly mumbled.

"What do you mean? Why?" Lizzie asked as she didn't understand why I would say that.

"She's been dating Jes for a few weeks, months maybe. She has the audacity to think I didn't notice, but like, look at them. The hands placement, the looks, it's obvious" I smiled to hide how scared I was that she might actually move out.

"So what, you want me to stay to not be alone?" she asked, I couldn't read the expression on her face.

"No, I want you to stay because- because it's easier when you're around. Because, I've never been so happy to come home at night, after work. Because, I l- would miss you too much" I admitted, avoiding to look at her.

"I wish I could stay, but I already signed the papers. I won't be that far, you know, and you'll see me at work everyday so..." she tried to reassure me.

"I won't be at work everyday, I've decided to focus on my studies again. I mean, I kinda gave up on them when I started working, and I miss it. I really want to get that fucking PhD" I chuckled. "I think I'll come a few times times a week, more if there's any problem" I added.

TIME SKIP: A WEEK LATER.

Everything went pretty fast, too fast. Lizzie moved out already, it only took her a few hours. Of course, I helped, but it was painful. Then, yesterday, Caity finally confessed that she's been with Jes for a few weeks, as I predicted. She wasn't that surprised when she found out I already knew about it. She told me that she was moving in with Jes, in her apartment. To cheer me up, she told me she'd like to leave some stuffs in her room, just in case. She knew how scared I was of being alone. I mean, not scared like the dumb teenager in horror movies, scared like the young adult who's been gave up on too many times.

It was a Thursday night, and I found myself alone, sitting on my couch. Waiting for anyone to come home, but of course no one did. Loki felt it, he felt how sad I was. He put his head on my lap, and looked at me with his comforting puppy eyes. "Wanna go to the beach?" I asked, and he suddenly raised his head, and ran towards the door. "I'll take this as a yes". We walked on the beach, listening to the sound of the waves, while the sun was setting down. No matter how tired or sad I was, I always felt peace in those moments. We didn't stay out too late as it was already quite late, and it was during winter, so I was dreadfully cold.

The next morning, I went to the set, and everyone was there, except Lizzie.

"Where's Lizzie?" I asked as soon as I ran into Brie, and Scarlett.

"Hello to you too! Yeah, I'm fine thanks for asking" Brie joked as she pulled me into a hug.

"I'm sorry, it's just that she's always early, and she's not here so..." I apologised, reciprocating the hug.

"She called me, her date from last night lasted longer then she thought, so she'll be a bit late" Scarlett explained, wiggling her eyebrows in a playful way.

"Date?" Brie repeated in a questioning tone.

"Yeah, that cute guy we met the other day. He's one of the extras. He asked her on a date yesterday, and she said yes" Scarlett explained us, and Brie seemed to remember who the guy was.

I chatted with them for a few more minutes, then I headed to my car. All I wanted to do was to go home to Caity, and tell her everything. I also wanted to cry, because deep down I knew I still loved Lizzie, and I hoped maybe there was a chance. How stupid. My head started to spin way to fast, and I was interrupted by someone knocking on the window. Of course, it had to be her. I slowly lowered the window, avoiding to look at her.

"Are you okay?" Lizzie softly asked.

"I'm fine" I shrugged, avoiding her emerald green eyes.

"You don't... look fine" she carefully said.

"Thanks" I sarcastically chuckled, ready to roll the window back up.

"Come on, you know I didn't mean it like that!" she gently spoke.

"So, how was your date last night?" I asked, sounding uninterested.

"This is what you're upset about?  Y/n, we're not together or anything, I mean, I'm allowed to go out with other people, you know?" she almost snapped at me.

"Subtle. You should go, you're already late" I spoke coldly as I turned on the car.

She hesitated for a minute, but then, she walked into the building, without turning back. She was right, we were not dating. We were nothing. A minute, that's what it took for my whole world to collapse.
