Lily remained still.

A little silence followed Elena's cry, then her mother cried out:

"Santa María, madre de Dios, todos los santos del cielo, ¡por favor ayúdame!"

"You what?!" Thundered Elena's father.

"It was an accident!" Elena replied. "We didn't think it would happen!"

"Los santos patronos y mi amado Señor, te lo ruego, ¡ayúdanos!"

"You are joking."

"I'm not! Papa, I'm not!" Elena pleaded.

Lily felt her heart speed up in her chest, the screams were too loud and she gradually felt herself losing control.

"Mama, papa, please—"

"No!" Her mother replied, getting up to point an accusing finger at her. "No. You," she said looking at Lily, "are having an abortion. I don't want to hear anything about it."

Lily felt tears rise to her eyes, her breathing quickened. Elena stood up too and Lily imitated her, as well as the father.

"Mama, she's not. She's not having an abortion. We're keeping it."

Her mother stood still for a short moment, then let out a howl as she rushed forward to pound Lily with her fist.

The young girl screamed, instinctively protecting her head, but the mother took the opportunity to hit her on the stomach. Lily doubled over, her arms outstretched for protection.

"Mama!"

Elena rushed between them, but that didn't stop her mother who started hitting her too.

"¡Niño ingrato! ¡¿Hice todo por ti y así me lo agradezcas?!!"

"Are you two serious ?!" Yelled the father. "Are you seriously gonna keep the child ?!"

"Don't touch her!" Elena yelled as Lily burst into tears.

"She's manipulating you!" Her mother yelled. "She's making you believe that the child is yours! She's a little whore who just wants your money!"

This time, Elena saw red.

"Don't talk about her like that! She is my love, my girlfriend and she is carrying my child!

"She's carrying an abomination! She's gonna give birth to a monster! Juan, madre de Dios, don't even think about it!"

Lily, curled up on herself, sobbed until she almost vomited, Elena's arms around her.

"We're leaving," Elena decided.

"Yeah, that's right, leave and don't come back!" Her mother shouted as they started running down the hall.

"You are not our son!" Her father added as Elena opened the door and led Lily out.

"I never was your son!" Elena yelled before slamming the door.

They rushed to the car, Elena drove off in a hurry. Lily sat still in her seat, in tears. Elena, furious, mumbled in Spanish.

"Are you okay?" She asked in a shaky voice, reaching out to feel Lily's stomach.

"Yeah," Lily sniffed. "My arms took most of the hits."

"God damnit, I can't believe they layed a hand on you. I'm gonna kill them. They tried to hurt you, they tried to kill the baby! I can't believe it! They tried to kill our child!"

"Lena," Lily whispered. "You're crying."

The girl brought her hand to her face to find tears rolling down her cheeks.

"Oh."

Suddenly she burst into tears.

"What are we gonna do? How can we do this? They tried to kill you, they tried to kill you!"

"Elena, pull over."

"They said our baby was a monster, an abomination! I hate them, I hate them!"

"Elena!"

"What are we gonna do? They are the monsters, they dared to say it wasn't mine! I'm gonna kill them, I'm gonna kill th—"

"Elena! Pull! The fuck! Over!"

Elena came out of her stupor and hastened to park on the edge of the ring road.

"I can't go back there," she huffed. "I can't go home. It's not my home anymore. I'm ... I'm homeless."

Lily grabbed her phone and tapped on it before bringing it to her ear. After a few seconds of ringing, her sister's voice sounded:

"Hello ?"

"Destiny?"

Lily sniffled, tears rolling down her cheeks.

"Yeah, what's going on?"

"Where's dad?"

"He left an hour ago. He said he'll be back Sunday morning."

"I know. We're coming home right now. Elena will be staying with us."

"Okay. For how long?"

"Forever."

"Lily," Elena interjected.

"I take it it didn't go well."

"You have no idea," Lily replied before hanging up.

She opened the door, got out of the car, and walked around to open Elena's door.

"Get out."

"What?"

"We're switching places. I'm driving, you're in the passenger seat."

"You don't have your license with you."

"Do I look like I'm joking? Move."

Elena got out of the car to take Lily's place as Lily got behind the wheel, adjusting her seat to the right height.

She restarted the engine, drove onto the dark ring road.

Beside her, Elena was crying silently.
