Lily was awakened by a strange feeling of discomfort.
Her throat was tight, her stomach ached and her heart was pounding. Nausea gripped her and Lily ran out of bed to reach the bathroom and kneel in front of the toilet. She released the contents of her stomach with a sickening noise that nearly made her vomit a second time. Trembling, Lily straightened up to lean against the tiled wall of her bathroom.
The nausea was still there and Lily was afraid it would never go away. She was too hot, her heart was beating too fast and rising in her throat. She was not feeling well at all.
Sitting on the floor, Lily read the time displayed on her alarm clock beside her bed. Just minutes before her current wake-up time.
Lily took a deep sniff and got ready for a tough day.
Lily
We need to tell Destiny.Elena
Why? Is something wrong?Lily
Morning sickness.Elena
Shit
Lily I'm so sorryLily
It's okay.
We need to tell her though, before everybody hear me throwing my heart up in the bathroom.Elena
Of course
I'm sorry
I hope you're okayLily
I'm better now.
I'll tell Destiny to come with me to the bench, can you meet us there?Elena
Of courseLily put her phone back in her pocket before heading down the stairs of her house to the kitchen. Destiny was sitting at the table and Lily knew that Hazel was still sleeping.
"Hey," she said.
Destiny only muttered a half-awakened growl.
"I need you to come with me after school."
Her little sister looked up at her.
"Where?"
"To a park. It's important."
Destiny shrugged.
"Okay."
"Okay."
Lily sat next to her little sister on the bench, swinging her legs as she twitched her Victorian dress. Beside her, Destiny was chewing cookies while telling her all the dramas in high school.
"You sure you don't want one?"
Lily felt her heart turn at the sight of the cookies and shook her head.
"No, thank you, I'm not hungry."
Destiny frowned.
"But you're always hungry."
Lily was saved by the arrival of Elena who gave her a shy little wave of the hand. Destiny took a confused and stunned expression.
"Hold up, why is Elena fucking Gómez here?"
"You'll see," Lily replied, smiling at her girlfriend. "Hey."
"Hi," Elena replied before turning to Destiny. "Hi. I'm Elena."
"I know," her little sister replied. "I'm Destiny."
"I know. I heard a lot about you."
Lily pinched the bridge of her nose. Smooth, Elena, way to go. Destiny's gaze shifted from one girl to another.
"Sit your ass here," Lily ordered, indicating the empty spot next to her.
Elena sheepishly obeyed, realizing that she had been making things worse.
"Okay, what the Hell?" Destiny asked. "You know her?"
"Yeah," Lily replied. "That's what I wanted to talk to you about. I want you to listen very carefully and not panic or overreact. I need you to stay calm."
"You're not helping, Lily," Elena remarked.
"Yeah, what's going on?" Destiny asked.
Lily exchanged a look with her girlfriend.
"Oh, well, Lena and I have been dating for almost two years now."
Elena clapped her hand to her forehead in despair.
"You what now?" Destiny asked.
"Good job Lily, that was smooth," Elena commented.
"Oops."
Destiny waved her hand.
"Hold on, you two have been dating for two years?"
"Yeah," Lily replied, taking Elena's hand.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Lily looked down at her shoes, which she kept rocking, silent. Elena took over.
"None of us wanted to come out. We were afraid of what people would say, and Lily thinks she would be more susceptible to harassment if she said she was dating me."
"I'm a no life. I'm a nobody," Lily explained. "I don't have the courage to face the looks of other students. I wanna stay hidden."
Destiny nodded.
"Okay, that makes sense."
She smiled.
"I'm happy for you. For you two. And I'm proud of you, Lily."
Lily couldn't help her half-guilty smile. Elena winced.
"Should we tell her now or do we wait a little?"
"Nah. We can't," Lily reminded her.
"Tell me what?"
"I'm trans."
"Okay."
Destiny took a few seconds before resuming:
"So, are you a trans man or a trans woman?"
"I'm a trans woman. I've been since I was six."
"Oh. Okay. Alright. Well, good for you. I don't see why I should panic."
Lily and Elena kept their smiles tight.
"Do I tell her?" Elena whispered through her teeth.
"I'm gonna do it."
"I'm right here," Destiny interjected, rolling her eyes.
"I'm pregnant."
Destiny blinked.
"YOU WHAT?"
Lily winced. That didn't go as well as planned.
"YOU WHAT?" Destiny repeated.
"Stop yelling! I'm pregnant. She got me pregnant," Lily explained, pointing a finger at Elena who smirked guiltily.
"Are you serious? "
"Of course I am! You think I would joke about that? Look!"
She took the tests out of her bag, which she kept hidden in a pocket.
"I took five tests. All positive. I went to Planned Parenthood. I'm pregnant."
Elena stroked the back of her hand with her thumb, a guilty look on her face.
Destiny stared at them in silence.
"God damnit! Didn't you use protection?"
"We did," Lily replied. "Except one time. It was enough."
Destiny sighed, rubbing her forehead.
"Alright, what did you decide?"
"We're keeping it," Lily announced. "Surprise! You're gonna be an aunty!"
Elena pursed her lips as if to keep from bursting into laughter as Destiny stared at them in amazement. A small smile appeared on her lips.
"Congratulations, then. I'm happy for you."
Lily rolled her eyes.
"You can say it."
Destiny burst out laughing.
"You guys are so screwed!"
