What is meant by human?
To many people, the name itself is just an indicator that we are a species ruling the planet, superior beings in many forms and the highest in the food chain. Or is it the fact that humans managed to walk on two feet, creating big communities, able to invent various forms of evolution and creating a stable society? Is that all there is to it? What is meant to live as a human? The choice that they chose? Where some may took a wrong turn and some may ended a little early. Or some may turn into a monster and some cower in fear.
A question that never seems to have an answer. A question that's constantly been asked by many. A question he's been meaning to know.
People may wonder why he's so fixated on that question. It's quite simple really. He's not human. At least that's what he and the people around him believed. Yes, he walks on two feet, have human features and can perfectly talk like any normal human. Then, what distinguish him from others?
It's his being. His own body was never truly his to begin with. There's something lurking inside him, locked inside him, sleep within him. Something vile, despicable and horrid. He can't shake it off him no matter how much he wanted to. It just stays there, as if it's a part of him. None knows where it came from. He didn't know his parents, or if he has siblings. Hell, he didn't even know if he was born. He's just...there. Existing and adapting to his current environment. He hates it.
The thing inside him..hates him. A lot of terms he can give to describe this awful being. A beast, a monster but he prefer calling it a demon. It haunts him at night, whispering nothing but hateful threats and lies, cursing him whenever it had the chance to show himself and taunting him for being weak. Yet, they both know that he's not. For one, his will is strong enough to seal it without letting it leak out of his body.
But demons have a cunning way of doing things. Despite hate for being sealed up in the body of a young boy, it grants him something none other humans could possess. A powerful ability that none can defeat. Weapons can't touch him, bullets can't scratch him and knives repel from him. It's just like those superheroes kids admired in television. Saving the world, protecting the city, rescuing people and those other nonsense.
Of course, there are a few setbacks. He's always weakened by it. Yes, the power lead an increase in his durability and stamina. But the more he use it, he realized the power is also a curse to him. He has a limit. A limit where he's open to everyone, even the demon. A state of vulnerability, weak and exhausted. If he ever cross it, the demon will take over him and he will die.
Seriously, what a lousy contract for someone who never signed up for it. Apparently that's how a contract between the devil looks like.
Also, life is not like a story from hero movies. Where one respect and admired those with powers. This is the real world. People feared him for being different, fear him for having a bizarre ability, fear him for something he never wanted. Some even took advantage of it. After all, his power is a strong protection. People use him to protect them yet blame him when something goes wrong. They thought their safety was entirely his and only responsibility without considering any of his words. And it hurts. That he never considered equal to them. Just a mere tool at their disposal. Never a human. His fiery red hair had long become a constant reminder in this sea of black and brown hair. That he doesn't belong anywhere.
