As much as he tries to keep quiet, the boy's breaths are too heavy and too loud. He continues his race and sprints further down the dark road, wishing the end would be soon. it eventually leads to the woods. The woods, the woods are freedom he thinks. Just the thought spikes up the boys adrenaline allowing him to continue.
"JACK!! GET THE HELL BACK HERE!!" The anger sends a chill down Jacks back creating goosebumps on my his arms. Jack notes he doesn't even keep his voice quiet. How many people can hear him? How many are just pluging their ears? He wants to scream to them. Please help. It'd just give him away. Turning onto the little alley way Jack can feel the silence envelop him. Running in the dark and quiet, while his feet pat against the ground, every step seemingly growing louder. He studied the map enough, he knows this road leads to the woods. Panting, legs buckling Jack pulls to a stop wasting no time before spotting a small foot bridge to hide under. Making a quick dash under it, sure no one saw him, Jack lets out his breath and revives.
Cramming himself under the bridge, Jack lays flat on his back, nose a centimeter from hitting the top. He wished he knew where OB were. Would they even take him is? He could play the 12 year old card, but he knew they wouldn't take him despite his age. They played to dirty.
The shuffle of feet brings him back to the present. Jack sucks in holding his breath. The feet kick some gravel and began to walk over the bridge. With each step on the small footbridge, Jack feels the vibration. The person carries on and Jack lets out the air he withheld. After a few minutes of making sure the coast was clear, Jack crawls out from under the bridge and creeps onto the highway.
A clear road, but also a bright one from the moon, lays in front of him. The road that will lead him away. Feet screeching to a halt, Jack squints at the silhouette in the middle of the road ahead. He knows it's one of Neil's men. Someone in Prav. Frozen, both the boy and the man stand perfectly still. Jack tries to force himself to move back, but he's to petrified.
"Jack. Come with me, your father is looking everywhere for you." it's Bait, one of my fathers closest friends.
"No." Jack whispers. Bait moves forward but not far, causing Jack to cower slightly.
"You found out what he's planing."
A nod from Jack.
"I might not fully agree with him Jack, but he's in charge. Running away too? Where do you have to go? No one in this godforsaken town knows you exist." Jack smiles on the inside, pleased that Bait doesn't know his plan.
For a minute Jack think he might actually let him go. For a minute hope fills him. Baits eyes gleam, but then his face hardens and he grabs Jack's arm. Holding back a scream to avoid more of Prav coming, Jack writhes his arm trying to escape Baits iron grip.
"You're coming with me Jack." Jack pulls his hand out in a smooth yank, but Baits speed grasps him by the shoulders before he can get away. With continuous wiggles and struggling, Jack gets no where. Earning a slap to the face Jack stops moving and drops his head. "For a 12 year old you sure are stupid! Just come with me!" Bait wraps his arms around Jacks waist and throws him over his shoulder. Jack doesn't even try to escape with the knowledge that Bait can easily over power him.
"Bait please..." Jack lets out a pretend cry and switches his voice sound desperate. "You're hurting me!" Surprised when he actually sets him down but wasting no time Jack takes off running. Nearly tripping over his own feet, Jack hears Bait right behind him. Maybe he can out run him.
A sharp left heading straight to a fence. Jack jumps it winding up in someones yard. After falling to his knees Jack picks himself back up, running across the yard. A loud thump tells Jack that Bait is right behind him. Heart picking up speed Jack grabs desperately onto the next side of the fence, scrambling up it. The tug on Jacks hood chokes him as he struggles against Baits force. Jacks foot lashes back nailing Bait in the crouch, while he elbows him in the face as well. Bait releases him and Jack continues landing in another yard. He races across the yard, this time jumping the right side of the fence in case Bait follows him. The sound of crunchy rocks on the landing tells Jack that he is back on the road. Glancing around, the woods, the freedom calls out to him from his right.
Jack remains still, feet glued to the ground. He just has to make it 100 yards. 100 yards until freedom. Before he knows it, Jack is sprinting for the finish; for the beginning. The second his feet touch the soft soil of the woods he collapses. Safe.
Jack gets up and walks into the forest not looking back on Crypt.
