We come out onto the street and look around. The town is dead. Maybe it's because everyone is actually dead, I think to myself. It's weird that there is no one around. This street has always had little traffic, but this is ghost like.
"Okay where to Karlie?" Zumie asks. You can't even tell she was just crying.
"Well, I need to get to my dads office and grab a few things and then head back to Jacks house, without getting caught. And I have over a hour." I say. Zumie laughs a little. I look at her in shock. This isn't funny.
"Okay dude come on, we'll have to cut through a few yards, but everyone is on total lock down after the riots so we shouldn't be seen. But um..." She trails off.
"What?" Why does she keep doing this?
She looks around for a second. "Um nothing. Nothing. I can get us there. Follow me." She states, very confident of herself. She heads left from the church.
I walk up to her side. "So, is this a shortcut you know of?" I ask a little questioning.
"What do you mean?" She doesn't even look at me, but I see her bite her lip.
"Well," I say as I realize she has no clue where she is. "The office is that way." I say pointing to our right now that we turned. She looks slightly embarrassed. "Have you ever been in town?" I say as we start to walk the right way.
"Well, not really. My father had to keep me a secret from the Surge and the Yuris. So I stayed mostly underground in the passageways. I mean I have been out of town and I have come outside only it's been at nighttime." She explains. "I thought about running away once, but I just can't. I'm not afraid of anyone, anyone but my father that is."
I grab her hand and we stop walking. "I know how you feel. Ever since my mom died," I stop myself. All of the Yuris babies are terrified of their fathers. I don't need to tell Zumie that. "What's the deal Zumie?"
Zumie looks at me then down at her feet. She grabs something out of her pocket. It looks like some sort of electronic box. She switches a button on it to off. "I don't know. I made a deal with the Yuris. They told me they would keep Dylan and Jack from dying if I brought you to your father. But after our talk, and Dyaln's death, screw them!" I yank my hand away from hers. "You know what Karlie! I am done with all of this manipulation and lies. We need to get our asses to that office and get Jack!" I look blankly at her shocked. So my instincts were right. She was a foe. She throughs the box to the ground and steps of it. It breaks into pieces.
"We don't have much time, correct?" I nod to her. "Then you need to decide now whether or not to trust me. I am trusting you and I promise I will help you. Do you trust me?" She bores into my eyes with her intense stare. I shouldn't trust her, but she is my best bet. Plus she did just break the recording device.
"I have no choice. Come on." We take off running down the street and cut through a few peoples yards. We round a corner and I can see the backside of the office. I know there's a window back there that I can squeeze through and I'll be quick. Zumie will be look out.
We stop behind a tree to make a plan. "Okay, so I'm going through that window and I'll get the money and the map. You need to help me into there and be on stand-by/watch." I tell her. "This needs to be an in-and-out operation." She nods that she understands.
"Okay. Let's do it then. Do you have a weapon?" She asks. I pull out my knife. "Okay and I have this gun." She reaches under her shirt and pulls out a little, but powerful, handgun. "Okay break."
We sneak to the back of the building. As she's about to give me a boost up, she speaks, "Thankyou for trusting me Karlie."
I nod and she boosts me up. I look through the dark window. I try the it but it's locked. I pull out the knife and jimmy it open. I stash the knife on a shelf near-by and hoist myself into the building. I bring my self down and jump silently onto the ground. This is the same room my father and John Mars were the night they erased my memory.
