While switching through Channels on TV, Dr. Brights walks in for the first time this morning. Last night he would come in almost every twenty minutes.
"Hello Miss O'Connell. How are you feeling this morning?" He asks with his little clip board again.
"Much better," I say honestly.
"Good. Do you mind if I do a few test?" He asks coming over to me before I answer.
"Sure," I say, although my answer didn't matter.
"Okay now I'm going to look into you're eyes, nose, mouth, and ears, then ask a few questions." When I nod he takes out a light and shines it in those places. "Okay everything looks good. Now how does your head feel?"
"Um it's definitely better then last night but I still have a minor headache." I confess.
He nods, "Yes that's normal. Any feelings of sleepiness or drowsiness?"
"No."
"Are you experiencing any side cramps or pains anywhere but your head?"
"No."
"Good, good. Ok Karlie you seem good to go right after we do a quick blood test." I nod and he leaves the room again. I sit on the bed and remember about the take over last night. Before I can think about it any more, Dr. Brights walks back in with a syringe.
"This shouldn't hurt." He takes out some of my blood and walks out of the room again to test it. He comes back almost to quickly to have done a test. "Okay you seem fine. I'm just going to give you a shot of something that will help the headaches."
"Oh, that's not necessary. I feel fine." I say. For some reason I don't trust him.
"No, no. Karlie, it's mandatory for you to leave." He looks at me calmly.
"Okay, then what is it?" I ask him.
"Simply some antibiotics. Is there a problem?" He asks.
"Could I wait for my father?" I ask. I still don't like where this is going.
"No need. He said he wanted you ready to go when he gets here." I nod. That sounds like him. Dr. Brights mistakes it for me letting him put in the 'antibiodics'. Before I can stop him he injects it and I feel better when I don't pass out or something. It must've just been antibiotics. "When your father comes you wil be released and just call here if your head hurts for longer then two hours when you get home." He says.
"Okay."
He gives me a long look. "Remember what I said last night." Then he turns. around and leaves.
I continue to switch the channels when I come across the news. I see the words "BREAKING NEWS" and decide to turn up the volume.
"We face a travesty in Crypt today. This morning on Elk St. they found 5 couples killed. It seems someone shot them but there is no evidence of who did it. Today marks a sad day as 10 innocent people died." I turn it off as I can't bear to listen to anymore.
The Surge didn't stop my dad. 10 people died because of him! I want to confront him and tell him I know but what will he do? He'll either kill me or make me one of them. The best thing is to keep in the dark about it. I can't help but think that if I let the Surge kidnap me then this wouldn't have happened.
Several minutes later my dad walks in. "Come on. Let's go home." He says and then walks out the door. I get up and put on my shoes. Then I go out the door. My dad is waiting out there. "Your checked out. Come on let's go." He says with a smug voice. He'a just so damn happy that he pulled off one of his evil schemes.
We walk out of the hospital and get in the car. While driving we see a lot of protesters holding signs that say, "Surge for life" and "Yuris is to blame" or "They were innocent!" Some of the protesters are taking rocks and throwing them at certain buildings. The sight is horrific but I can't help but smile. The people see right through my dad, and they know he is wrong. We pass by my dads "Reality Building" and see them. The building is on fire and the protesters are throwing rocks and chanting. The windows are broken and people are running in and out trying to save any valuables before letting it burn.
"Holy shit!" Yells my dad. He pulls over. "Karlie get in the back and lie down. I'm locking the doors so don't come out or let anyone in." I do as he says and hide in the back. As soon as my dad gets out I here the cops and firemen coming down the road. The sirens and screaming is so loud that I cover my ears. I get curious and sit up and look out the window. The cops aren't trying to be nice. They are bashing peoples head with the butts of there guns and kicking people who are down. One of the protesters pulls out a gun and shoots one of the officers. It's like seeing everything in slow motion. Then if it hasn't already all hell breaks loose. The cops start shooting the protester and everyone runs around. Most of the protesters start to attack the guards and others run away. The cops start shooting anyone in the scene. Some of the protesters spot me in the car and run over. I go out the side door and run as fast as I can to shelter. The only problem is that there are protesters everywhere. And there is no where to run.
"Get her!" Yells one of the protesters. I run around down Main Street. I see a side road and take it. There is a little bridge and I run under it before the protesters see me. I hear them run by searching for me. After about 10 minutes I go out and look around. I don't see anyone so I start running down the road. I see the high school up ahead and I sprint to it.
I remember that school is still in when I see them out for lunch. None of them know what's going on outside. There parents, clusins, brothers and dying and they have know clue. I run by a few people who yell my name. I run straight to the woods the way I went the night of prom.
I think about heading home but what if the protesters are there? I run deep into the woods where I know Jack will be. I finally get tired and start walking. I hear Jack before I see him. He emerges from the trees carrying some quail.
"Boy you look tired." He comments. Then he looks at my face, "What's wrong? What happened?" He asks. He is so scared that I can only imagine how bad I must look for him to say that.
"Can I stay with you for a while?" I ask panting between words.
"Ya of course. How long is a while?" He asks.
"I don't know. But I have a lot to tell you."
