"I'll answer anything." He says. Looking happy that I changed the subject.
"Okay. How many people are in the Yuris?" I ask.
He laughs. "That's impossible to answer hun."
"Oh, okay well how about in this town?" I offer.
"All of the rich people basically. Anyone your father has sold a house to, and any of his 'colleges'." He tells me. That's a lot of people.
"And the Surge?" I gulp.
"There are so many. More then in the Yuris. They have a giant base camp. But I have no idea where it's at." There's not even that many people in town. Where could they be hiding?
"And what are their plans?" I ask in hope that he knows. He has to know.
"Well, there's a lot. Years ago they had big plans. The Yuris was going to train kids to become fighters. They wanted an army at the schools. They figured the Surge wouldn't hurt kids so they all tried to have kids. This created a baby boom. That is why you were born. But the Surge knew. They knew that the Yuris wasn't all just having kids. They started killing off the mothers before the children could come into this world. They got yours right after you were born." That would explain why my mother died in child birth, I think to myself. How many other people died because of this.
"So that's why the Yuris is mostly men?" I ask.
"Bingo."
"If they know I'm alive then why haven't they tried to kill me yet?" I ask. This is a fair question.
"They have. But they're getting smart. I don't think they want to kill you anymore, just use you." He states without emotion on his face. He must be thinking.
"Are you going to tell me how you know this?" I ask.
"Not yet."
"But I thought you trusted me?" I ask a little hurt. After playing in the water I thought he would.
"I do." He says.
"Well I can't trust you." I decide. "Not until you give me a little on your life. To many people have lied to me and I just..."
"Karlie, if the wrong people find out, if anyone finds out. I can't. I'm sorry. But you have to trust me." He pleads. His eyes almost tearing up.
I look into his begging eyes. I can tell he's not lying. I can trust him but it's hard for me. I never really realized it but I'm so screwed up. I never really trust anyone, because they all hurt me.
"Here." He says while thinking. "I'll show you something no one else has ever seen." He says. "Something better then this waterfall."
"Something better? What could be better?" I ask.
"I'm going to show you where I live," he says. And I immediately know how big of a deal this is. He's so protective over his secretive life and he's showing me where he lives. I can hardly breathe. I nod my head.
Jack gets up and offers me a hand up. I take it, almost like putting my trust into him, and we stand up. He leads me back towards his traps and far into the forest. We go deeper into it then I've ever been. It becomes so dense and cold that I forget there's anything else in this world. After a long time of walking I see light up ahead. There's light spilling through the trees; we most be coming into a clearing. When we get nearer, I see something that is definitely more breathtaking then the waterfall.
