Merrill wandered through the dark caverns, the only light coming from the end of her staff. She shivered slightly as a cool draft came from behind her, causing her to begin to run. She didn't think it would be cold here, but she wasn't thinking of the weather, she'd just wanted to get away from Kirkwall. So many bad memories. As her stamina depleted, she came to a stop in front of a strange looking mirror. It looked similar to her eluvian, in size anyway. The frame was a simple one, in a tarnished golden colour, with illegible writing along the top of it. The elf ran her fingers along the frame, moving behind it to see if she could find anything on the back to specify it's origins. As expected, there was nothing. Not even her magic could uncover anything about the strange mirror. Sighing, Merrill returned to the front of the object and wiped the dust off of the glass, so she could clearly see herself. She gasped as she realised she was not alone.
"Y/N?" Merrill asked, her voice wavering. The girl with her in the mirror smiled and nodded, her H/C-ed curls falling down past her shoulders. The elf spun around, expecting to find Y/N behind her, but found that she was alone. Confused, she turned back to the mirror, only to find Y/N smiling sadly at her.
"Y/N, what's going on?" Merrill demanded, her eyes slightly watering.
"Merrill," the girl in the mirror said, placing her hand on Merrill's shoulder. "I'm not real."
"How can I see you then?" The elf asked, putting her palm over Y/N's, even though she couldn't feel it, it was only her reflection.
"This mirror shows you your greatest desire." Y/N said, moving her hand.
"How?" Merrill asked, pressing her forehead against the cool glass.
"Ancient magic." The human replied, brushing her hand through the elf's jet black hair.
"I'm so sorry Y/N." Merrill cried, finally letting the tears spill from her eyes. "It's my fault that you died."
"Don't you dare say that!" The human snapped, tears falling from her eyes as well. "You know it wasn't your fault. The arrow was in my chest before you could even get to me."
Merrill shut her eyes tight as the memory entered her mind, a memory she'd relived every time she closed her eyes.
Knight-Commander Meridith was attacking Hawke, her Templars attcking anyone who got in her way. Marian was taking the Commander head-on, her sword covered in blood. Merrill was trying to keep the Templars away from the Champion, exhaustion almost overwhelming her as she cast spell after spell. She fell to her knees as a Templar knocked her over and felt that it was the end. Suddenly a sword was thrust through the Templar's throat, causing him to choke and fal to the side. Y/N appeared in front of the mage and scooped her up into her arms, taking her to the side of the fighting. "Merrill, don't exhaust yourself!" The warrior scolded, pressing a chaste kiss to the elf's head. "Stay to the sidelines of the battle, keep safe." She grinned before running back into the chaos. Merrill regained her strength and returned back to the battle, looking for her love. Spotting her, the elf called her name. Y/N turned with a smile and waved to her, never noticing the arrow coming towards her.
"Y/N!" Merrill screamed, watching the arrowhead come through the front of the girl's chest. Her hands came to the wound, her hands painted scarlet with her blood. The elf ran to her side and tried to heal her, but it wouldn't work. If only Marian hadn't killed Anders! He could have helped. The tears started to fall from her eyes and she buried her head into the human girl's shoulder. "Merrill, it's okay." The dying girl smiled weakly before the life left her eyes, leaving her elven lover alone and scared.
"I love you Merrill." Y/N smiled, wiping the tears from the elf's face.
"I love you too." The girl cried, placing her palm on the cool glass. Y/N put her hand against hers for a few seconds before she faded, leaving Merrill alone once more. Sobbing, the elf fell to her knees and wept for hours.
