L: just sick. nothing too bad.

Amity frowned down at the incoming message, the glaring light from her scroll bordering on intrusive in the pitch black forest.

Another text came in shortly after the first: probably from potion yestrday...never again

A: Yes, that was a bit of a mess, Amity typed back. Are you sure you don't want me to come over?

The Owl House wasn't very far away. Though Amity was currently walking towards Blight Manor, she wasn't so deep in the forest that she couldn't turn back. It was quite late of course — Amity should have never stayed at the library so long — but she was already out after curfew. She'd be enduring the wrath of her parents regardless.

L: thats lright you have exam to study for
next time ?

Amity's first instinct was to text back that the health of her girlfriend mattered much more to her than any abomination grade (not to mention she really didn't need to study, seeing as she was bound to get perfect marks anyways).

She stopped, however, thumbs hovering over the keyboard.

This hadn't been the first time as of late that Luz hadn't wanted to see her. She had been...distant. It wasn't like she was ghosting Amity or anything. It was more like she was holding something back, for what reason Amity couldn't begin to surmise. If her girlfriend was hiding something, naturally she would want to know, if only because she knew Luz had a tendency to keep the things that troubled her close to her chest. Whenever Luz would get like this, Amity would always dread the moment when whatever Luz was shoving down would inevitably rear its ugly head.

Luz shouldered so much sometimes, was it so terrible to want to lighten her load?

Unfortunately, Amity also knew better than to push, especially over text. Luz would come to her when she was ready. She always did. Even if it felt like this time it was taking an eternity.

A: Next time.

Amity stowed her scroll away, letting a tired sigh escape her lips as she did. Her breath fogged up into the air, though she could hardly see it in the darkness. It really was late. The moon was absent from the sky tonight, a lunar eclipse if Amity remembered correctly. Aside from the small light spell at her side, Amity could hardly even see the path before her as she continued towards her destination.

Amity should have never stayed at the library so long but it wasn't her fault. Not completely, anyways, though the reason made her all the more heavy-hearted.

Originally, she was supposed to meet Luz for their monthly book club meeting but the girl had been a no-show. While Amity preoccupied her doubt with some extra work hours, she would be lying if she said she hadn't been watching the front doors, waiting for Luz to show up. As she placed books back into their shelves, she imagined Luz rushing in, apologizing for being late, cheeks flushed and a little out of breath because she had run over when she realized the time. It would have been a simple mistake, time had gotten away from her or she had to run a last minute errand for Eda. They would laugh about it before happily retreating to Amity's study.

Instead, all Amity got was a vague excuse.

It was frustrating for a number of reasons and Amity wished it weren't. This wasn't the first time Luz had hid something from her but it was certainly the first time she had acted so flaky. More often than not, Amity felt like an afterthought to her girlfriend.

Amity reached a hand up to squeeze the bridge of her nose. "She's just sick," The girl mumbled, shaking her head for good measure. "Stop being so dramatic about this, titan."
