pearl of time

14 4 12

a book opened

words to fall into

a time to slip through

a world to inhabit

slipping through time

a shining pearl

of knowledge

of understanding

making history

making time slip

making changes

making history

falling into a war

watching people marching away

never to return

i fell in love with the people

fell in love with the clothes

the buildings

the people

the history being made

slipping through time

like the pearls on a necklace

slipping through history

like sand through fingers

falling into time

falling into love

falling into the stories

that make up history

and then

slipping back

through the beads of time

back into the present

pearls of memories rolling

pearls of love rolling

pearls of wars rolling

pearls haunting

pearls of a time gone by

pearls of people gone by

pearls of a memory gone by

pearls of a love gone by

nobody told me the war ended

and so i roll the pearls around

and around

watching them glow

with a long forgotten light

okay. wow. as someone who has fallen in love with history (and also mitski's songs, which this poem is based on (see the very top of the page)), this was so so fun to write, but also sad. remember the people in those wars. remember the ones who died. lest we forget.

this one's dedicated to daisy, for getting me stuck on mitski and inspiring me to write this poem. thank you for reading! please comment, vote and share to let me know what you think.
