The next day they had potions class, along with the Slytherins. Lily was reading her book as she always did at the start of potions, none of her friends sat next to her, so she would read until the lesson started. James manoeuvred his way to the seat next to hers. He was particularly excited for the lesson today, as he sat next to Lily and he was eager to talk to her about the night before.

She felt him sitting down next to her and rummaging in his satchel for his quill, ink and paper. She glanced up momentarily, and he grinned widely at her. She looked back to her book, rolling her eyes.

"Hey Evans," James said cheerily, "how you doing?"

Lily didn't even glance up and turned the page in her book, "I'm fine, Potter. You?"

"Oh uh, I'm fine too," James was a little taken aback by the lack of enthusiasm, "is that a new book?"

"Oh this, yeah it is. Finished my last one last night."

"Aw cool. Was it any good?" James carried on, keeping the same energy.

"Yeah I enjoyed it," Lily didn't want to talk to him. She had agreed with herself that last night was some weird fluke and she mustn't have been in the right mind. There was no reason for her to be all friendly with him all of a sudden now.

"You know I never really got reading. I mean I enjoy it and all but it's just so boring. Music and magazines are better I think. So much easier and more relaxing."

"I like music too, I just also like books," she replied simply, "and anyway what's wrong with books? I love reading, I find it really relaxing actually."

"Nothing! There's nothing wrong with books, they're awesome!" James was trying to make an effort, but he could see he wasn't getting anywhere. For now, he gave up, he had the whole lesson to get Lily to talk.

"Alright everyone, settle down," Slughorn signalled for them to be quiet, "today we will learning how to brew amorentia. As this is your first attempt at making this particularly tricky potions, you shall be working with the person next to you."

Brilliant, James thought, no excuse to get out of talking to me now.

Brilliant, Lily thought sarcastically, I'm stuck with Potter all lesson.

"Ah, Mr Snape. Where is your partner today?" Slughorn inquired.

"I think she's off today sir, ill with a cold," Severus replied gruffly.

"We'll I suppose you'll have to work with the pair behind you then. Evans, Potter is that alright with you?"

"Of course Professor, that's fine," lily said, dejectedly to Slughorn. She was still mad at him for putting his name in the goblet, but she was at least glad she wasn't stuck alone with James.

James looked up. No. No, no, no. Absolutely not. Severus Snape turned around to face him and Lily. He smiled with a longing look at Lily, which turned into a cold sneer as he glanced at James.

"Alright everyone, get your books out and turn to page 176, collect your ingredients and begin! You will have an hour to ,are your first draft, good luck," Slughorn announced, and straight after the classroom started bustling with students opening their books and standing up to get equipment.
