The cool night breeze slips into my shirt as I get out of Adam's car. The neighborhood is quiet except for the sounds of nocturnal creatures in a distance.
"This was fun, Liv. Let's do this again
sometime." Adam says, flashing me a grin.I want to give him a hard no, like always. Maybe just glare. But I can't deny that I had fun too.
This is why I avoid him. Because I know that he'll do something like this and I won't have the heart to be mad anymore.
I shrug. "I'll think about it."
"That's not a no."
"Don't provoke me, Lynch."
He chuckles and just stares at me, his lips curled in a grin, his eyes happy. Content.
I fidget under his gaze, still shuddering from the cold. "Do you have something to say?"
He flashes a set of pearly whites. "That pin in you're hair is beautiful."
I instinctively touch the tinfoil nestled in my hair, my cheeks burning. Shit, he's doing this again. I let out a deep breath, my heart suddenly sinking instead of fluttering. "Goodbye, Adam."
He turns in his seat, placing both hands on the steering wheel. "Good night, Livster."
His car speeds off down the street and I watch it grow smaller until it disappears over the horizon, my heart still heavy in my chest.
What exactly is he trying to do?
I turn to my house and twist the door mob, only to get a pillow thrown in my face.
I groan. "Really Aiden? Really?"
Aiden's head peaks up from behind the couch. His brows furrowed. "I didn't throw that!"
My narrowed eyes trail to the small boy holding a pillow, his icy blue eyes widened in fear. He lowers the pillow.
"Sorry." He says, his voice hardly a whisper. For a long time, I thought that was actually how he talked, that was until I saw him playing with Aiden. Now I know he's just not as comfortable with me as he is with Aiden.
"Hey, Brent," I say, reaching over to ruffle his mop of pitch-black hair.
Aiden leaps over the couch. For a second, my heart leaps with him. I take an instinctive step forward, ready to catch him if he falls.
He lands on the carpet almost slipping but managing to keep balance. My heart swells with relief as he runs up to me. A grin across his face. "Ruffle my hair, too!"
I narrow my eyes at him trying to force an annoyance that wavers. I can't be annoyed at him. I was, at one point, before I knew his condition. Now I can't bring myself to it. I pick him up and toss him on my back. He squeals with terrified thrill.
"How many times have I told you not to jump over couches?" I scold, shaking my back a bit. His grip around my neck tightens. He clamps his legs over my waist.
"I'm sorry!" He laughs, his face pressed into my back.
I pretend to fall over, causing him to erupt in panicked laughter.
Brent stands in front of us, offering a little smile in amusement but it falters. A gloom dims his eyes.
Brent is the only child of the richest people in our neighborhood. They are usually always on business trips and seem to forget he even exists most of the time. He basically lives at my house now, popping up anytime he can. I don't recall exactly how he and my brother met because Brent is homeschooled. I just know that they met and in an instant, they became each other's, only friends.
At least until Aiden joined karate class.
Sometimes, when I mess around Aiden like this in front of him, I wonder if he feels jealous. Envious because his family isn't really there.
I stretch my arms out, wide enough for him to jump into as Aiden muzzles his chin into the crook of my neck.
Brent hesitates, he shifts in place before slowly shaking his head.
"No? You don't like hugs?" I ask, my arms still spread out.
He shakes his head again.
I roll my eyes. "Come on, you're my brother too, y'know."
"Yes! Blood dragon brothers of zordark, forever!" Aiden pitches in, his voice going an octave higher.
I don't even wanna know what that means.
He stares at us for a while, then at the carpet. His cheeks swelling in a smile.
He lifts his head and leaps at me, wrapping his arms around my neck.
He's not as heavy as Aiden considering he's two years younger but his weight still throws me off guard, causing me to stumble, my arms waving in an attempt for balance. It doesn't do much good because I still fall to the ground.
Aiden rolls off me, clutching his stomach in a fit of giggles, Brent still has his arms around my neck, laughing widely.
It's times like this, times when everyone is laughing over the stupidest shit that makes me warm all over. I don't even remember what I was annoyed about, to begin with.
Someone smashes a pillow into my face.
"Surrender mere mortal!" Aiden shouts at the top of his lungs, hitting me again. Brent wiggles off me and grabs a pillow of his own.
"Oh no! Please, have mercy!" I feign overdramatic terror, though snickering lips.
"Never, I shall destroy you once and for all! Unless you can do something for us dragon brothers!"
"Aiden-"
Another pillow to the face. This one from Brent, "Silence!"
I laugh again. "Oh please, do forgive my mortal ignorance. Whatever shall I do for the strongest and most powerful blood brothers?!"
"We want chocolate chip cookies, tomorrow!" Aiden commands, holding the pillow menacingly.
"Oh yes, whatever you say." They step away from me and let me get up. When I do, I strike an overdramatic pose. "Little did the blood brothers know, this mortal... Was there father all along? Dun! Dun!! Dun!!!"
They gasp at the dramatic plot twist.
We spend the rest of the night roleplaying. I don't usually do it. In fact, at one point, I thought it was lame. But if my brother loves it, then I love it.
After tucking them into bed, I stagger into my room, exhausted. I tumble into my bed and stare up at the ceiling, my limbs aching from excessive movement.
Suddenly, my phone rings, and It takes all my remaining energy to reach over to it.
Hot stuff
Can I ask you a question?
