One month later
Tine's POV
"I got you a job, now you get Sarawat to talk to me."
"I never asked you to get me a job."
"Were you just planning to stay jobless then? I thought you were serious about Sarawat."
"I am serious about Sarawat. I love him. You know that."
"Then take up the god damn job, stop being a broke jobless idiot, and ask Sarawat to talk to me."
"I have already asked him to talk to you.. several times, he—he doesn't budge. I am sorry Big Gun."
"You are sorry? You are the one who disappeared for three months and yet my son just forgave you —just like that? Its been more than four months and he hasn't talked to me once." Big Gun put down his coffee on the table angrily. He was trying to look serious and strict — but he was just pouting at this point. May be this is where Sarawat picked up his signature sulky pout.
"Wel.. it wasn't that easy to get his forgiveness to be honest.." I answered, "He made me carry a lot of boxes.."
"Boxes?" Big Gun looked at me confused.
"Yeah, he keeps making me carry boxes from the store to his apartment — and then back to the store. Last week, he took me to a flower shop and made me choose flowers for 3 straight hours! And the week before that he made me eat different types of cakes for dinner — and then asked me to critique them. It was horrible!"
"Was it horrible Tine? Was it really horrible? So he bought flowers and cake for you. Do you really expect me to feel sorry for you or something? It just sounds like my son is way too good for you."
"He is still angry at me. I can feel it. You don't understand."
"Oh shut up. You have been living at Sarawat's apartment the whole month since you came back, Phukong told me already. Do not even try to deny it. To think my own son would forgive you so easily and wouldn't talk to his own father."
"Its just the Teepakorn charm, Big Gun." I brushed off my shoulders.
He rolled his eyes. "Really? Then take that charm of yours and come with me to meet the Attorney General to finalize your job offer."
"I—" I looked away. "I told you I don't want to become a District Attorney. I am too young to be a DA. I am half convinced you are trying to pull a joke on me."
"Why would I joke about this, Tine? You are a brilliant lawyer and you'll be a great district attorney. Nobody is pulling a joke on you. The NIA Chief wrote a personal recommendation for you."
"I—I am too inexperienced for this."
"No you are not. All the millionaires and billionaires you successfully defended — Now they will just be on the other end of the court. If you can keep them out of jail, you can very well put them back into it too. You know where they hide their skeletons. Who would be better than you?"
"Literally, everyone?" I put my coffee down. "I disappear, my law firm goes down, and then I suddenly rise from the ashes four months later as a District Attorney? Everyone will think, I cut a deal."
"So what?"
"They will think I don't deserve this."
"Who cares what people think, Tine? You have got the approval of the Attorney General, you have got the NIA Chief's approval, and you have got my approval."
"People will.. people will think I am just using my connections to get farther in my career. And I don't want that. I don't want to be one of those rich kids who would get to nowhere in their life without their family's connections. I know this offer wouldn't even be on the table if it weren't for you. I don't want to owe anyone anything."
