CHAPTER TEN Waves
‿︵‿︵‿︵
(PRESENT)
This was a recurring thing for them.
John B glanced over at her after he had put the van into park, watching her carefully. Acting as if he blinked, she would break like a china plate. Feeling his gaze, Avery turned her face to look back at him and raised her eyebrows at him. He sighed and diverted his eyes, glancing over at the store sitting a few metres away.
For the past couple weeks, the two old friends had been sneaking off from the group to visit the shack. John B caught Avery spying on her father and questioned her. Admittedly he knew he probably looked at her like she was crazy. After the blonde tried to make it sound less weird than it definitely looked, he understood.
It was John B that actually offered to go see him this time. With the hurricane coming in, the island was making it's way into lockdown until it passed. The Cut got the short stick when it came to natural disasters, having nothing special or grand generators, or endless money to fix the damage. The island faced a lot of storms, the Pogue's knew what to expect and do by now.
"You know, I would do anything to see my dad again," John B spoke up, softly gazing back at his friend. She visibly tensed at his words, sitting up straighter in the passenger seat and avoided his gaze. "To just talk to him"
"I know John. It's just–"
"It's not that easy for you, I know, Aves" He almost whispered, detecting the irritation raising in her tone.
She bumped her head against the headrest and turned to meet his eyes, "I promised Peterkin that I would do the right thing, and I know, I know that talking to him is but–"
"You're scared that you won't see the same man you saw before" John B finished her sentence, making her shamefully nod as he was speaking her mind, and she couldn't deny it. "Oh, Aves"
Wrapping his arm around her shoulders, John B pulled her towards him and she dropped her head on his shoulder. The tears built up in her eyes and she could feel her bottom lip start to tremble. She was full of emotions and didn't know how to control them, letting them overwhelm her the moment she hit her friend's embrace .
Ruining the sweet moment, John B quickly pulled away and shoved Avery down in her seat. The blonde gasped a little, sinking as far as she could in the passenger seat, glancing up at the brunet. John B was staring out the window and raised his hand, awkwardly waving. She couldn't see what he was seeing but took a good guess that it was her father, making her scrunch up her nose and close her eyes.
