Dahae placed her hands behind her back and decided to look away from Luhan. She could feel his piercing glare and the tenseness in his voice.
"I said what are you doing here?" He repeated himself.
Dahae finally built up the courage to look at Luhan. She still couldn't believe she was in the same room as him afer not knowing where he was for a whole month. His expression looked uninterested and irritated.
"I just um...wanted to know everything was ok..." Dahae let out softly.
"Everything's fine. You didn't have to come all this way to check." Luhan remained headstrong, "Wait. How did you get here."
"I-I came here with Baekhyun and Mijoo. Baekhyun drove."
"They're here too?" Luhan asked. Dahae nodded timidly.
"So this is the place where Haru is getting treatment?"
"Yeah. The doctors in the hospital didn't know what to diagnose her with, so they sent her to get specialized medical attention."
Dahae listened to Luhan once he explained that Mrs. Shin took in patients and served as a private caretaker. Staying in her care would be more beneficial than staying in a hospital. And because she works from her home, she is able to provide housing for Luhan so he would be able to stay with Haru as well.
"Will you be coming back to school soon?" Dahae asked.
This time, Luhan was the one to look away. "I can't. I dropped out."
Dahae widened her eyes and moved in closer to Luhan, "Y-you dropped out?? Why? No, you have to go to school."
"I can't afford the tuition anymore, Dahae. Ever since--" Luhan's voice went down once he saw Haru was listening in on the conversation.
Dahae stared sympathetically at Luhan. She wanted to hold his hands and console him, but she didn't think they were back at that level yet. Dahae remembered how she pestered Luhan about getting help from his parents to pay for the apartment, for school, and to take care of Haru and felt like a complete idiot. "Baekhyun told me about your parents. I'm sorry."
Luhan frowned, "He told you?"
Dahae nodded. "I know you're having a tough time right now, but I want you to know that I think you're an amazing brother for taking over after your parents. But you shouldn't feel like you have to deal with this alone. Maybe you can contact your other family members and I will always be here for you...and Baekhyun and Mijoo too. You can always come to us," Dahae added. "I, I mean, we want you to come back. Haru too." Dahae nervously played with her hands as she shifted back and forth on her heels.
Was that a small smile Dahae saw in the corner of Luhan's mouth? "They want me to come back home, or you do?"
An instant flush of red appeared across Dahae's face, "Well I'm not saying that they don't want you to come home as well but...I know that I really do."
Luhan let out a breath, knowing that he was making Dahae feel embarassed answering his question. "Well I don't have any family members to call anyway. Both my mom and dad didn't have any siblings and my grandparents are dead too."
Dahae stared even more sympathetically at Luhan. At 20 years old, he didn't have any family at all.
"There also another thing I want you to know. You always say that I'm such a good big brother--"
"You are," Dahae assured him.
Luhan rubbed the back of his neck then stared seriously into Dahae's eyes. "The thing is, Haru is not my sister."
Dahae raised an eyebrow and looked behind her to see Haru sleeping again on the bed, then back at Luhan.
"Haru is my daughter."
Dahae looked as if there was no oxygen in the room. A silent breath escaped from her mouth as she gaped slightly at Luhan. Her lips tried to move, but if she was trying to say something, what was she going to say? 'Haru is my daughter'? She couldn't be. On the other hand, Luhan looked as if he predicted Dahae's reactions.
"H-how?" Dahae managed to spurt out.
"How?" Luhan mimicked Dahae, letting out an calm chuckle. "3 years ago, Haru was born. And I'm her father."
"S-so this whole time--"
"Dahae, Mijoo wants you to--"Baekhyun walked into the room and paused in the doorway. "Luhan?? When did you get here?"
"It's nice to see you again, Baek." Luhan said and gave his friend a hug.
Baekhyun looked at Dahae in confusion and back at Luhan. He could sense that he just interrupted something.
"I told Dahae," Luhan sighed, "that Haru is my daughter."
"Y-you knew about this?" Dahae asked Baekhyun.
"Baekhyun is the only one who knew." Luhan said. "But now, I guess you know my secret too."
