I woke up drenched in sweat. I held my chest in an attempt to calm down my breathing.

I had dreamt of my life before vampires. I occasionally had dreams that revolved around my past trauma but nothing this detailed and accurate.

I hadn't ever told anyone about my past, I suspect Charlie knew something happened but I don't think he knows to what extent. It's just too hard for me to talk about, it brings up memories I'd rather forget. It was long ago and I've moved past it as much as I could.

"Hello Angelo, are you okay? You seem dazed." Caius asked walking over and moving my hair out of my face.

I smiled attempting to ease his concern "Don't worry just a bad dream, nothing to worry about." He nodded, I could tell he didn't believe me but didn't want to push too hard.

"We have assigned your main guard, get dressed and you can meet her." He said I nodded waiting for him to leave but he didn't.

He raised his eyebrows and shrugged "What are you waiting for?" He asked I scoffed and threw a book and him, he caught it and laughed.

"Wait outside, I'll be dressed in five minutes."

I got dressed quickly, I walked over to my wardrobe. I picked out a white dress and a purple cardigan. It was extremely hot in Italy this time of the year, so I made sure I came prepared.

I went out of my bedroom, Caius stood patiently waiting for me.

"Ready?" He asked, I nodded interlocking our arms.

We wandered around the castle finally getting to a big room with a gold door. Caius pushed it open allowing me to walk through first.

There was a group of red-eyed vampires standing around, all wearing the same black and red cloaks.

One girl was standing ahead of the group, she had honey blonde hair and pale honey skin, she had a terrifying yet almost inviting look about her. "This is Jane, she is your guard member, Jane will make sure you are safe at all times." Caius explained introducing me to Jane, I think I've seen her a couple of times before but never longer than a glimpse for couple of seconds.

"It's good to finally meet you, my queen." She said lowering her head slightly to bow.

"Oh, please call me Vera." I pleaded a comforting smile across my face.

"If you wish, Vera." She replied

"Amore Mio, come meet the rest of the elite guard." Caius said taking my hand.

The guard was worried about their new queen, they had heard many rumours about her, some of the other guards saying she is spoilt and undeserving to be queen. Most of the elite guard was just happy they didn't have to deal with Sulpicia and Athenodora they were horrible, always demanding things and talking to the elite guard like they were merely gum on their shoes. They all knew the kings never really liked them, they had no idea how they dealt with them for so long.

Caius dragged me over to meet the rest of the guard and Jane followed behind me. There were three men one I recognized as Demetri, I had met him a mere day ago but still sent a smile which was returned. Then there was a boy no older than 16 who had similar features to Jane but dark brown hair, and lastly, a giant male who had the height of a building was standing there, he must've been at least 6"5 with dark brown hair.

Felix was the first to speak "It is an honor to meet you, my queen." Alec said nothing only bowed his head slightly.

Vera smiled at the two men and Alex couldn't help but stare at Vera She was so beautiful and warm it was like she had captured all the joy in the world with only a smile. He felt the need to protect her, no harm would come to her if he was around.

That was a vow he would carry with him for a long time.
