The innocent looking nimbu-mirchi
hanging down from the festoon of Asoka leaves.
The sparsely oiled hinges of the black gate,
With iron pressed buds and flowers.A demon faced mask hung
from the tallest rail
of the balcony,
(facing east, of course!)Gods drawn in their traditional armour
on slippery tiles
or coarse cream walls.Evil - waiting with patience,
the dust of everyday footsteps.
A suddenness to their journey
and the black door looming.* Nimbu-mirchi - lemon and chilli, used as protection against bad omens.
