Warding Evil Off

The innocent looking nimbu-mirchi
hanging down from the festoon of Asoka leaves.
The sparsely oiled hinges of the black gate,
With iron pressed buds and flowers.

A demon faced mask hung
from the tallest rail
of the balcony,
(facing east, of course!)

Gods drawn in their traditional armour
on slippery tiles
or coarse cream walls.

Evil - waiting with patience,
the dust of everyday footsteps.
A suddenness to their journey
and the black door looming.

* Nimbu-mirchi - lemon and chilli, used as protection against bad omens.
