the story is coming to an end!!! there's gonna be two endings(probably), they continue from chapter 9 <3
enjoy! The leaves Sparkling stepped on rustled softly, he tried to recall where Herb had ran off to that day and went in that direction. He looked at his phone, it was 4AM. Sparkling felt exhausted, the fatigue was setting into his head. Nonetheless, he kept on calling the boy's name. "Herb..! Herb..?" Eventually, he found a lake where many fireflies lit it up dimly. That's when he heard a faint cough. It was hard to tell which direction it came from so he wandered randomly until the coughs became louder. He came across a cookie lying down on the ground, in a bed of flowers. He walked towards it, "H..erb..?" Sparkling managed to utter. The cookie shot up and glanced towards Sparkling, they could only see each other's silhouettes. The cookie stepped back, not saying a word, "Please...I know it's you.." Sparkling said. The cookie was about to run away but Sparkling gripped onto their arm, "Urgh...what are you even doing out here, why weren't you at the hospital?" He asked. The cookie didn't reply, in fact, the cookie couldn't reply. They didn't know what to say. "Sorry..." The cookie mumbled under their breath, what they said was indistinguishable to Sparkling, the surrounding atmosphere was louder than their voice. He pulled the cookie closer, patting their shoulders, "Herb, that's you right?"
"N-No it isn't, sorry sir but I'm afraid you've got the wrong person..." the cookie said, "No, you're Herb. You have to be, I recognise your voice..." Sparkling replied, "No, I'm not sure...who you're talking about..." the cookie silently choked in tears, looking up at the silhouette of Sparkling, "You've got the wrong person.." The cookie sounded desperate, well, desperate to run away at least. "Why do you run? You don't have to hide your illness anymore. I'm here." Sparkling hugged the cookie, he could feel his damp clothes from their tears. "Don't lie. It's you, isn't it?" He said, the cookie was unable to respond again. Maybe it was because of the crying, or maybe relief. Relief that he was found again, relief that...someone was there for him. But what would Sparkling say if he knew the illness was because of his undying love? He was still scared, full of doubt despite the reassurance he'd gotten.
Sparkling could feel the cookie trembling and hugged him tighter, "It's okay. Release all your tears, Herb.", "You act as...as if you understand how I feel...but you don't. You've got no idea how coughing up flowers on a daily basis is like. It hurts, Sparkling. It hurts." He cried, "...You're right, I don't know how it feels. So can't you just...let me try to understand...? Instead of running...away. Let me help you...?" Sparkling released himself from the hug.
The sun was starting to rise, who knows how long Sparkling was searching for Herb, and who knows how long Herb was waiting.
Waiting for his knight in shining armour. And he came.
As the sun rose, they saw each other's face. Just barely, Sparkling could faintly see the blood dripping from the corner of Herb's mouth and the lime green hair that he'd familiarise with the boy that would wave at him everytime he'd pass his bar, and Herb saw the golden blonde hair that he missed. They stared at each other for a while, taking it all in. "...It's...because I like..no, I love... you," Herb managed to muster up the courage to say, "That's why I've got this illness." He curled up into a ball onto the ground and dug his head into his knees, "I'm sorry." He said, Sparkling was taken aback. "You..do?" He replied in disbelief, "Obviously...did I not make it obvious enough..." Herb sighed, "I-I'm sorry for being so dense... Honestly, I thought you despised me. I mean...you ran away from me so..." Sparkling scratched his head awkwardly.
"Well, I love you...too." Sparkling smiled at the gardener. The same warm, familiar smile he'd always show.
"..What?" Herb took a step back, "You...you're lying...only a fool would like somebody like me..." He said.
"Well, I do. So call me a fool."
"Your fool."
"N-No..no you don't, nobody likes me...!" Herb shouted on the verge of tears, "If nobody likes you, do I not exist in your life?" Sparkling stepped closer, Herb started to cry again, "You...you exist! B-But your feelings aren't love!...It's fake, I-I know it!" Herb took a step back.
"Hey. Stop trying to...argue. I love you and that's that."
Herb stared at Sparkling and started to cry, "But...I'm a wreck, you know?...A complete...mess."
"I don't care if you're a mess. I can...help, I can assist you. Won't you rely on me?" Sparkling softened and held Herb's hand, " I promise I'll help you. I swear that I will." He gripped Herb's hand tightly, not letting go. Stepping forward."I promise that I'll...help you with any problems that you face. So believe me, please?" Sparkling pleaded, Herb cried louder and brought him into a hug.
"I...I will."
