Chapter 10"Oliver." I heard the voice of George's mother as I was awakened from my light slumber.
"Good evening tita." I greeted her and soon I felt a sharp pain on my head which made me wince.
"Are you alright?" She asked with worry evident in her tone. "Yeah, I'm just quite tired. I guess." I explained as I tried to smile as authentic as I could.
"You need to rest Oliver." She said as she sat beside me. "We can take over from here, go home. Spend the Christmas Eve with your family." She stated as she gently pat my back.
"No tita. I'll stay, mom and dad will understand. They know how important George is to me." I remarked, staying firm in my decision.
"If that makes you comfortable, you could stay." Then she hugged me tightly in her arms.
"Thank you Oliver." She whispered as I heard her silent sobs.
"Tita," I said as I broke the hug and looked at her eyes. "I don't want to give you any false hope, but someone advised me to have her checked again. Please tita, give it a shot. She might still be in there." I said as my eyes lingered at her body lying almost lifeless on the ICU bed.
"Oliver. I hope I do really hope that she's still fighting for her life, and I know she's still is. She's a strong girl." She said as she wiped her tears away and smiled sadly.
"I'd talk to Gerard about it." She smiled, and as if on cue tito walked towards us.
"Good evening tito." I greeted him and he nodded at me with a sad smile.
"Where is Sandra?" He asked as he sat beside tita. "She already went home, her mom has called her already." I stated.
"And you, aren't you gonna go home for Christmas eve?" He asked.
"No, I am planning to stay." Then he just nodded in response.
"Gerard, can we have George checked again? Please? I know she's still in there." She pleaded as he held on to his hand and closed her eyes as tears escaped from them.
"Rita. Don't do this. I just want to let her go, I don't want to be led on. This is also difficult for me, please." As he spoke I felt anger well up inside me. How could he easily accept it, when the rest of us finds it hard to let go. How?
"Gerard. Please, do it for me. For Sandra. For Oliver. Please, do it for George." Her voice still sad but firmness was there. I crossed my fingers as I silently hope that he agrees, that he was swayed by her pleas.
He sighed as he eyed the both of us warily.
"If that would make you at ease, then as soon as the hospital would allow us we could get a second opinion."
Then I smiled, please God let her live. Give her another shot in life. He smiled back at me and the both of them took me into their arms.
"Thank you Gerard, thank you." She said breathlessly.
Thank God for a family like hers. Thank God there is still hope inside of them. I now know where George got her persuasiveness and her strength.
Then my phone suddenly rang, "Excuse me, I just have to take this call." I said as I took my phone from my pocket.
I looked at it and saw that Karen is calling me.
Then I remembered my promise, I answered her call and in that moment I swear she was very disappointed with me.
"Oliver. Where the h*ll are you already? My parents and relatives are all here, wouldn't you mind going here already?"
"I am very sorry Karen. I know I promised, but look I can't leave George and her family -"
Then I was cut off by her answer, "You can't leave her family, but you can ditch mine?! This isn't fair Oliver!"
"I am very sorry, but I just can't. Look, I love you and you know I'd do anything for you. But not this even though I had already promised."
"Shut it! I hate you! Why do you make me hope that you feel the same for me then all of a sudden you'd let me go. I hate that you treat me like I am some piece of crap! Love? Really Oliver? Such lies." She said, infuriated as she shouted every single word.
"George is brain dead." And that silenced her.
"I'm sorry." And with that she hung up on me.
I looked at George and in that moment, I realized that I love her more than anyone else. That this love is the kind of love that I had been wanting for so long.
