I heard the doorbell ring downstairs several times before it was opened by momoa. This was followed by a screeching sound of two women acting like the handsome version of Shrek was standing right in front of them. One was unmistakably my mom and the other was my ex-roommate Jessica Goodwill from college. Jess and I went to Esmeanor University to earn our Bachelor's degree in Journalism. Jess had honey blonde hair with a sparkling smile to go with it. My hazel eyed best friend had anybody she came across in the palm of her hands, especially my momoa. I don't know how she does it but its quite entertaining. I heard my mom call out for me " Sam! Jessica is here!" I went downstairs and found Jess talking to momoa about her recent trip to Italy.
"Mrs. Robinson, its true what they say about the spaghetti, you won't find anything like it anywhere. You have to serve Italian spaghetti to your visitors at the various organizations you are so frequently chosen to cater"
" Hahaha Jessica. I'll try getting the recipe although I doubt I can pull it off with perfection. And what did i tell you about calling me Mrs. Robinson? You can call me Laura. "
Okay sure Jess is somewhat a suck-up but it seems like I'm the only one who seems to notice it. Momoa earns a living by catering people at various organizations ranging from weddings to highly dignified magazines' parties. Which reminds me, momoa got a contract for one of the highly glorified magazines "Golden Edges " tomorrow.
Momoa clapped her hands and said "Alright girls, enough of standing around. We've got a big day tomorrow" to which i couldn't help but reply "You mean you've got a big day tomorrow." Mom shot me a look which I bet was the reason why Frosty my Japanese spitz breed dog ran up the stairs.
Upstairs in my bedroom Jess was tearing apart my closet trying to find something 'not so decent' for me to wear, if you know what I mean.
"You've got to look hot for tomorrow's function Sam and when I say hot I don't mean Ariana Grande hot, I mean Scarlett Johansson hot" Jess remarked. See now this is one of the reasons why she's my best friend....because I need fashion advice. I'm not saying I don't have style. Though It's never as good as Jess's Pradas for a walk in the park or Jimmy Choos to throw the garbage out. Okay that was a bit of an exaggeration, Jess would never throw the garbage out. You would have to rip out every hair from her body before seeing her do the real dirty work.
"Sam I'm sorry to say this but my grandmother has better clothes than you do. Don't you ever go shopping?"
"Hey! I didn't have the time okay? College just ended like ten days ago.I had a lot of unpacking to do. And you know how busy I was during college with preparing for the finals, actually not just the finals. We had the regular weekly presentations and the..."
"And the professor suck-up business going on with your perfect grades. Yeah I know how much you loved that."
Wait, did I here that right? I'm the suck-up? To the professors? I think my left ear engine is failing.
"I do not suck-up to teachers. I just simply excel in what I do best."
If it wasn't for my mother entering the room I would have to hear the sound of fashion police sirens coming out of Jess's mouth.
"Jessica darling I hope you haven't set your heart on any of Sam's clothes yet." momoa said.
I couldn't help but smirk at Jess's almost disgusted face at momoa's comment. Boy she really hated my sense of fashion. I refuse to change. I like wearing skinny jeans, a simple blouse and light weight sweater. If that's what keeps me happy then so be it. I mean it's not like it's that bad right? Sometimes I wonder why in the world Jess chooses to walk around like she was 5'6. I mean c'mon, she was not more than 5'2 without the heels. I personally think there's nothing wrong with that for a 24 year old girl or must I say woman? Damn! Momoa's carelessness of not calling us mature adults is rubbing off on me.
" Ofcorse not Mrs. Robins...I mean Laura, of Corse not. In fact I was just telling Sam what a hard time I was having choosing something for her to wear, isn't that right Sam?" Jess said with the sweetest version of auto tune she could find in that voice box of hers.
"Oh yeah mom, Jess made it pretty clear."
"Okay good because I had bought something for you and was planning to give it to when you returned home from college but it seemed to have slipped out of my mind" momoa said with a wave of her hand .
Yeah mother, like how you keep forgetting that it's me that's your daughter and not princess Jess of killmeville. May seem to you like I don't like her but it's not like that. She just gets on my nerves sometimes. Okay, most of the time but I love her. Mom went out and returned with a dress which she lay on my bed. It was a pretty pink dress which consisted of a wrap style top and a patterned skirt which sure as hell was gonna fall way above my knees. Jess shrieked with excitement. I gave her a look saying 'Isn't this what you wanted?' . She smiled and welcomed my mother in a hug.
"Laura you really must give Sam some glamour tips" Jess said.
"Jess that's what you are for." momoa responded. Then they both started laughing. I could have sworn I was amidst the two ugly step sisters and I was Cinderella. Kept telling myself to have courage and to be kind.
That night I couldn't help but wonder what a party held by one of the most praised magazine would be like. I've never been to one since I was abroad running after my college degree all the way to London. I had a feeling that what is to come is more than what i can expect.
