I admitted that it was a messed up plan. Possibly, everything about my head and how it works is messed up. As I have probably mentioned before, we humans are the creatures who eventually get ‘used-to’ things. The terror attacks, the natural disasters, the environment flushed down the toilet, we were so calm about it all. The attitude adopted in these cases is something I personally call the ‘Shit Happens’ attitude. I was, obviously, no exception. The way my mind functioned had stopped surprising me. At least for now it had. I kept going over the plan in my head. It could go sideways in just about an infinite number of ways. There was absolutely no chance of me checking out every scenario and every outcome. Nothing in the plan could be ‘the worst that could happen’. Things could always get far worse. To be honest, I had no idea at all about the kind of people or creatures I was dealing with. Which was why I thought it important to get Tina in on the whole thing.
Getting a hold of Tina has always been a major pain in the ass. I had begun to understand that the moment I had overstepped some invisible line, she would make an appearance to warn me off or scold me. One would probably think that she was mother-ing me about but I couldn’t tell. I did feel supremely annoyed though. No one likes to be told what to do or what not to do. What they like even less is the fact that the other person thinks of themselves as rather righteous when commenting on the wrong-doings of others. You tell someone to step carefully. They misstep and break a leg. You rant on and say things like, “I told you so”. As if you’ve never been there before.
I found her again outside the library. I had gone in to research about the angels and demons and the spells used to bind them together. I had finally learned that only a spell man can perform a spell. I have no idea how one is appointed as a spell man. But hey, it managed to piss Tina off and she made an appearance. I was pretty positive it was something along the lines of ‘I asked you to stop mucking about’ or some shit like that.
“Save it,” I said when she was about to speak. I stormed off in the direction of the cafe and I knew she was following me, simmering. I took a seat at my usual table and she sat opposite me. Zoya was manning the cash counter. The cafe was empty except for these three students at the other end talking in hush-hush tones.
“I need to speak to you about something,” I told Tina.
She smirked. Now I knew why I wanted to wipe off that serene smile she normally had on. Because I knew it would add up to a horrible smirk. “What about?”
“The Erudite Church. They have more information on what a Nephilim is. I need it.”
Tina shook her head. “No. None of us can enter that Church. I can’t help you.”
“Actually you can. You or your people don’t need to go in. We can have someone else infiltrate the Church and feed us information.”
I saw Tina process this. It took her about two seconds. At first the idea had a grip on her but then I could see her shutting herself out. “No,” she finally said. “Too dangerous. And how exactly will you find someone to infiltrate? What all do you plan on telling them? I can’t. It’s too dangerous. The Erudite are everywhere and they know more than most. They will find out.”
