We both weren't big fans of plans. The best laid plans went astray. I didn't need a book to teach me that. I could constantly complain about life being unfair and bitchy. But it had one thing going for it. There was no better teacher than life. We didn't sit, the Horseman and I, to decide how we would go about the mission. We didn't do any hard thinking. We had no back up plan. We were just going to wing it.
We were now at what could be identified as a safe distance from the blue and white TEC mansion where I had followed Zoya and one of the idiots of the organisation. It hadn't changed much. The curtains were still drawn and there was no hint to show that the mansion had been occupied.
Let's walk in.
I took the Horseman's suggestion and rode over to the tall iron gate that led up the driveway. The courtyard was stark. Except for a few trees scattered around, there was no other vegetation. No signs of life. The place was dead as a morgue. I remembered that Zoya had told me about another place that served as headquarters for TEC. Maybe that's where all the action was. Maybe that's where Zoya had been taken.
No, I doubt it. She hasn't been 'taken'. You watch too many movies. She's only being watched closely. I have a feeling they will let her continue with her training and classes as usual. She will never be on her own though. We can't risk her being tortured or anything. She's not very important to me as she knows NOTHING about me yet but...
But what, I wondered. I had not known the Horseman to hesitate.
But something seems to be drawing me to stop her from coming to any harm. I suppose it could be you influencing me, just as I do you. Now that you already know we can hear each other's thoughts and feel one another, I suppose there is no harm in telling you that you can influence me to a certain extent, although it is always me who will win. The power I wield is far greater than you can imagine.
I can influence the Horseman? NICE. Only bit of happy news I've had in forever. Okay, so we have no plans. We were planning on walking in through the front doors. I was still human. Flesh and blood. If I was attacked, I would die. Oh yes, I'd continue walking and moving but that would be the Horseman. That wouldn't be me at all. What on earth was I going to do to stop myself from dying?
Dude! WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?! DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?
Oh right. Horseman of death. It could have me not-eligible for dying if it wanted. I was trusting the Horseman of Death to not get me killed. I might have to check myself into a psychiatric facility once this was over, if it was ever getting over at all.
HA BLOODY HA HA. Now listen up. We are getting her out. We have to shield her in every way possible. She's still human and therefore, fragile. Although she won't die. I have strictly instructed all my Reapers to not get you or her. No such luck for the Erudite though. If a few of them come in harm's way... well, that's that.
Oh I was beginning to wonder why the Horseman had become so righteous. But the fact that it didn't care which of the Erudite died in this little rendezvous eased my doubt. And to be honest, I didn't much care either. The Erudite were self-centred, from what I knew of them. They were far too bossy for my liking and poked their little noses in things that were definitely not their business. I wouldn't have such a cavalier attitude towards the lives of people but I guess the Horseman was finally working its magic on me.
