Two rather lengthy months passed since his ruling against dehumanizing the girl child and granting them equal opportunities, and the reaction had been far better than King Adigun had anticipated. Swarms of women from around the Kingdom sang his praises, and countless families sent him gifts as their children resumed school just a day before.
Through the entire ordeal, he watched Ambika Devi stare at him with rather acknowledging eyes but her lips remained sealed and her words to him were scarce. He could feel himself long for her every blessed night, but things between them remained as rocky as it could be. It wasn't as he had hoped but he hoped to let time heal the rift and get her to forgive him for her father's death.
'You have a visitor, my lord", Suraj announced from the door and brought the King some much appreciated distraction.
He waved them in and felt his face lighten with joy upon seeing none other than Durga and her father walk into the throne room.
"Look at who we have here!" King Adigun smirked wildly while Durga seemed to fall silent in her steps and her father immediately began to gesticulate and fall to his knees in worship of the King.
"I had the King eat at my house", he mumbled. "I had the King of Brinda eat at my house with my family!" he man continued to bow and sing praises to Kin Adigun.
The confusion on Durga's face was clear as day, and she approached in few steps before going on her knees.
"Durga Behen", King Adigun called out to her before lifting her by her shoulders.
She looked back at Suraj and then back at the King through her veil. "You are the King of Brinda? How is this possible?"
King Adigun invited her over to a seat while her father was served something to eat and drink. They spoke for hours and he explained the events and ordeal that had taken him through the entirety of Brinda and landed him in her home as well.
"I never would have seen the treacherous men for what they were and none of this would have been a thing if not for you", he said to Durga.
She shook her head and replied, "Bhai Saab... your highness... I came here to thank the King for the kids who have finally returned to school and for the positive changes all around".
"You can address me as a brother", King Adigun smiled at her. "On the contrary, I should thank you for accepting to spearhead the counsel with whom I will be discussing trivial matters around the kingdom. I understand no woman has been given such task before and I assure you this is not because you saved my life but because I appreciate your wisdom and tenacity".
Durga looked to the side for a moment and then replied, "Your simplicity is nothing like any I have ever seen".
King Adigun had wondered if she would remember him; having had his fake beards off when he fell, and his entire disguise messed up while she took care of him, there was no denying she would recognize him.
Suraj held his hand up as he approached. "There is also one piece of important business I hope to discuss with you".
Bewildered, King Adigun looked from Suraj to Durga and then back again to his man.
"I have been meaning to tell you that Durga and I have been seeing each other for a month now", Suraj broke the news to the King.
Durga interjected, "Though which time he never once mentioned he worked for you. I wasn't even sure if he was the same man in my house months ago when the both of you came falling from the heavens".
The trio shared a rather lengthy laugh before King Adigun sighed, smiled and laid his hand atop Suraj's shoulder, "This is one of the most loyal person I have met in my life. If I am being sincere, he is the most loyal person in my life and I give you two my blessing".
Suraj looked from the King to his woman and then back again. "Well, she had no idea it was you she would be coming to thank and I figured it is the best time to let you know that we will be getting married weeks from now".
It felt like a large canon ball of happiness had been dropped on King Adigun and he could not in entirety, channel his emotions.
"I cannot opt ot of giving you my blessings and I will be taking care of every single expense for this wedding", he pledged to Suraj. "I have found a sister in Durga and in you I have found family as well. I am super excited for you two".
It was the best bit of information the King could have gotten in that time frame and he stared at the dup as they walked away, wondering if his relationship with Ambika Devi would ever become so tender.
"I need to see her", he thought to himself.
King Adigun found himself standing before her door once again and with little to no nrve to walk into the room as he intended within his heart. He counted his breath and leaned his ear into the door, wondering if she was listening to him.
"Suraj and Durga, the woman who saved my life some months ago, are getting married to each other in few weeks", he announced to her, just as he had given her every information he thought was necessary over the past two months. "I am super excited for them and I was wondering if you would do Suraj the honors of gracing his wedding with me".
Her silence came around again and he felt a sharp hurt in his chest but he didn't take it to heart any longer. It was her way, and he was getting used to it already.
Retracting his steps, feeling defeated and wishing she would at least see him, he heard the door unlock and the veiled woman with whom he hoped to speak stepped out. She stood in his sight for a moment without moving and he could feel every inch of his body and soul edge towards her. He wanted her, he wanted to feel her and above all, he wanted to be with his wife and queen.
"I will be there", she muttered.
The words sank within his heart and clung tightly to its walls.
"Thank you for everything so far", she added.
Slowly, she retreated, closed the door and bolted it shut just as she would often do. King Adigun stood there for a moment, counting his breath and accessing his emotions without knowing how best to react or which of his positive emotions to put into effect. Swarms of butterflies swirled around in his stomach though, causing him to grin from ear to ear.
Turning around and heading to his bedroom to sleep alone just as he had done over the past two months, he jumped high into the air, fisted the wall and screamed in joyous tone.
"Yes!" he yelled in happiness and with the feeling of being acknowledged.
It was the most gratifying feeling he had felt over the past few months asides having the little children come greet and thank him for being able to go back to school and for all the donations he had made so far.
"She sees everything! She is watching!' he screamed to himself while he danced his way to his bedroom.
Finally arriving at his door, a sting of sadness pierced his heart while he thought about sleeping alone for the night again. The nights were becoming far more brutal, and his desires for the queen were constantly culminating into sexual ones he could not ward off. Everything about her from her face to what her body would possibly look and feel like, caused his heart to stir differently.
Mumbling to himself in affirmative words, he whispered, "Soon... we will be together as one happy family soon".
While he wasn't sure about when he'd spend the night with the queen, King Adigun was certain of a good night's sleep after what turned out to be an excellent day.
