"-I didn't even think he was going to ask me, Y/n! I thought he didn't even like me, even though we've been together for months- I mean, he did think I was cheating on him with one of the Weasley twins, which wasn't ideal... Y/n, are you even listening to me?"
"Mmm hmm," I say absentmindedly without my eyes leaving my book, flipping to the next page as I continue to read more about the mending charm. Daphne gently grabs the book and removes it from my grasp. "Hey! I protest. I reach out to grab the book, but she extends her arm, making it far out of my reach. "That was a very good book you just interrupted," I tell her, cocking an eyebrow. Daphne only sighs.
"I was just talking about how Theo asked me to the Yule Ball."
"That's lovely. Now, can I have my book, please?"
"No-" Daphne grunts when I try again to get my book, pushing my head back hard. I sigh and collapse onto one of the couches, giving up. Daphne eyes me for a moment before slowly saying, "So, any idea as to who you're going with?"
"To what?" I ask stupidly.
Daphne rolls her eyes.
"The Yule Ball, dummy."
"Oh." I shift uncomfortably as my eyebrows furrow. "I... I don't really have anyone in mind. Nobody here really strikes my fancy."
Ever since the head of houses had announced the Yule Ball, Hogwarts had plunged into absolute chaos. I had never known so many people to put their names down to stay for Christmas; I usually didn't. However, nearly everyone in their fourth year and above seemed to be staying, and they all seemed to be obsessed with the coming ball- especially the girls. Though I had already been asked by a few Durmstrang boys, a couple of Ravenclaws- one of which I actually considered going with- and a Slytherin first year, to my horror, I didn't have anyone to go with. I could've easily said yes to any of them, but for some reason I couldn't quite name, I didn't want to.
And I think I knew why.
"Hmm." Daphne eyes me suspiciously, as if not fully believing me. "That one Durmstrang boy was quite good looking."
I scoff.
"And?" I ask, raising an eyebrow.
"Why didn't you go with him if you don't have a specific person in mind?"
I pause for a moment, glancing both ways to see if anyone's listening.
"Actually, there is someone," I whisper to her. Daphne's face lights up with excitement.
"What? Who?" She asks, her voice rising two octaves as a stupid grin crosses her features. I hesitate. "C'mon, Y/n! Who is it?"
I nervously clear my throat.
"Well..." I step off the couch and go down to one knee, "...Daphne Lenora Greengrass, will you go to the Yule Ball with me?"
I raise my hands in defense as a pillow comes flying my way from the couch. We both laugh as a figure approaches us from the corner of my eye. Blaise sits down beside me, a small smirk crossing his features.
"A shame," he says as Daphne and I regain our composure, his high cheekbones practically glowing in the emerald green light, "if Daphne wasn't so helplessly in love with Nott, you two would've been quite the couple."
"And besides," Daphne adds, ignoring Blaise's previous comment, "Y/n isn't even capable of fancying someone." She turns to face Blaise, wrapping an arm around him. He wrinkles his nose and pushes her off of him. "How about you Blaisey?" She goes on, amusement lacing her voice, "Have you asked anyone yet?"
