Stepping back onto the Hogwarts express, it takes everything in me to not to smile. I glance down at my robes, where my emerald green and newly adorned Prefect Badge sits on my chest. Just looking at it, a wave of excitement washes over me.

This year is going to be fun.

Malfoy walks at my side, looking more irritated than anything.

"I can't believe we have to patrol the train," he mutters, scowling. "What an extraordinary waste of time."

I roll my eyes. "Being a Prefect comes with responsibilities, you know." I say dryly. Why Malfoy was selected as Prefect, I have no idea. "Not that I would expect you to do any of them, given that you've never had any to begin with."

Just an hour ago, the new fifth year Prefects were asked to meet in a different part of the train to discuss the new duties, responsibilities, and tasks that we had to complete as Prefects. While most of the new Prefects came as no surprise, such as Hermione Granger, some of them caught me completely off guard. I would have never imagined Ron Weasley as a Prefect, and especially not Draco Malfoy, of all the people.

"Doesn't mean I want to do them," Malfoy snaps. He then sighs, scanning the train. "I'm going to find Crabbe and Goyle."

I don't bother to stop him as he storms off in a fit of anger. While most of the Prefects were irritated that they wouldn't be able to sit with their friends during the train ride, I was secretly relieved.

There was somebody I needed to see, anyway.

I fought back against the smile threatening to spread across my face. Still, I couldn't help it. I hadn't seen him all summer.

After a moment of thinking, I decide that I'm going to find Blaise and Daphne before patrolling the train. Once I find their compartment, I slide open the door, but don't bother to walk in. I lean against the edge of the slide door. I'm surprised when I see Theodore Nott is sitting in the compartment as well, who usually opts to sit with Pansy Parkinson and some of the other Slytherins in our year. Sitting across from him are Blaise and Daphne, who instantly look up.

Daphne spots me, and immediately grins. "I was wondering when you were going to show up, Y/n Pucey." Her eyes scan my robes, and when they land on the Prefect Badge, her grin widens. "I knew it!" she exclaimed. She excitedly turns to face Blaise and begins to shake him, who lets out an amused smirk. "I knew she'd become a Prefect!"

Blaise looks into my eyes and mockingly claps, smiling as he does so. "Does this mean that you'll let us sneak out after hours?"

Daphne frowns and nudges him hard. "Blaise! Just because your friend is a Prefect doesn't mean you get to abuse her powers." She then hesitates for a moment, and nervously asks, "Well, do we get to sneak out after hours now?"

I laugh. "Knock yourself out, Zabini." Blaise gives a triumphant grin at this. Although I'm not supposed to, I slide into the seat next to Theo Nott, trying not to cringe. Based on last year's events with him and Daphne, I absolutely loathe him.

"So," Blaise starts as I'm sitting down, "who else was made Slytherin Prefect?"

"Malfoy." I answer flatly with a frown.

Blaise rolls his eyes at this. "Of course he's a Prefect. How lovely."

We talk for a few more minutes, talking about our summers, the things we did, the places we visited, and the people we met. All of us are careful not to mention the obvious: that Voldemort was back, and that it wouldn't be long until most of us would be joining his ranks soon.
