"What a weakling," Edric's elder brother, Eric, the crown prince, muttered under his breath with a sly smirk as he gripped the collar of the poet shirt that Edric was wearing, causing him to look directly in his brother's dark eyes.
"Stop seeing that Ezèrian. She's our enemy!" his brother hissed as he let go of his collar and kicked his stomach, causing Edric to cough but he didn't fight--he never did.
He loved his brother too much to hurt him.
"Father gave up on his three renèi Possessionsand transferred to you just to turn you from a Naught to a renèi Possessor, and this is how you repay him?" his second brother, Eros, who was enjoying everything came forward. "By loving one of those monsters and betraying him?" he spat as Edric flinched upon hearing his voice. Loud voices scared him more than anything.
"Honestly, when I become the king, I'll give you a death penalty for treachery," Eric shook his head as he clicked his tongue.
Edric looked away in shame, not knowing what to say. He swallowed the lump that formed in his mouth as he thought of what to say. No words came out of his mouth--only tear fell from his bright eyes.
"Tell me, that Ezèrian, did she put on a spell on you? a love spell, perhaps?" Eric asked, raising his thick eyebrow.
"It could be that. I mean, he's a prince--so it only makes sense she wants him to swoon over him," Eros added, bobbing his head.
"But don't worry about it, Edric. We are your brothers! So, of course we'll help you!" his older brother smiled brightly. "As you know, I'm a Memory Eraser, do you want me to possess your memories and erase every memory about that witch?" he suggested, cocking his head to a side.
"And I can write your memories," Eros added while smiled.
For the first time, after being beaten, humiliated and cursed, Edric spoke, his voice like a whisper. "No. . . no, she. . . she isn't like that," he managed to say.
"Princes don't stammer!" Eros nearly yelled as Edric flinched again, his heart beating fast as he gnawed on his lips. "Sometimes I think you're not even our brother. You're just a Naught--an ordinary human being with no power whatsoever," he pushed his brother as he fell on the ground--defenseless, hurt and broken.
Just when another kick was about to land on Edric's fragile body, a call from the guard hampered Eric. He realized his free time to torture his brother was over and had to return to his work. Edric seized the golden opportunity to run away and without wasting a second, he stood up, ran to the window and jumped over it.
He didn't look back as he ran. He ran and ran until his two feet dragged his tired body to the only place he ever felt safe. The meadow.
On occasions, he'd tell himself that it was the meadow that made him feel safe, that it was the warmness of it that made him forget his pain, that it was the meadow that put him at ease. The moment when he finally arrived at the meadow and saw the person lying, he knew he was wrong.
Because the person in the meadow would always put him at ease, would make him forget his worry and pain and lastly, would make him feel safe.
He breathed in the spring air deeply as he waited for her to notice his presence. It didn't take her less than a minute to figure out that he was there, cocking his head to a side as his dark chin-length hair also fell on a side, greeting her with a warm smile, his dimples appearing in his left cheek. She couldn't help but just return the genuine smile of his.
"I came, Mira." He said quietly as Miranda nodded with a smile.
"I thought you wouldn't," she said as a warm breeze gushed over her cheeks, causing her long white hair to be spread over her cheeks and make her tuck them behind her pierced ears. She gestured him lie down with him, to hold his hands as they both enjoy the beauty of the spring meadow.
