STARS

"Appa, why aren't there so many stars tonight?"

Little Seri asked her father with inquisitive eyes and a slight frown on her face. Father and daughter went stargazing on their rooftop one night, like they would normally do after supper.

"Seri-yah, the stars are all still there. They don't go anywhere."

"But where are the others? And why don't they twinkle so brightly?"

Keenly observant and very precocious for her age of four, Seri looked up again and stretched her neck as far it can go -- in hopes of finding more stars to count.

Slowly tilting down her head, she asked again.

"How can we make the stars shine brighter, Appa?"

Her father carefully collected his thoughts. He knew that every answer he gives her, Seri will remember and take to heart. So he took this as an opportunity to teach her a lesson she may find useful later on in life.

He smiled and looked at his daughter's eyes with pure adoration.

"We can't, Seri-yah. But sometimes, it takes dark moments in life to show us true light. When things are tough, stars will show up in your life to share their brightest light."

As if searching for stars that will shed some light, Seri stared back at his father loving gaze. She may not know exactly what he meant by his words but she knew she had to listen with her heart.

After so many father-and-daughter stargazing nights until there was no more, little did Seri know that her Appa's words will resonate again deep in her heart.

That in her darkest nights -- when life literally throws her out and she crash lands on an unknown territory, in her toughest moments to survive -- a star will shine so bright to give its true light.

That when she gets lost in the dark, this light will be all her eyes can see, like a North Star guiding her until she finds her way home.
