TWINS

"Saengil chukahamnida, Ri Ji-hye!"
"Saengil chukahamnida, Ri Joo-hee!"

A few years ago, I just dreamed of being a father to twin girls. Today, they have turned two, celebrating with their proudest appa in the whole wide world.

It was more than just a drunk confession over soju one winter night in Seoul, or a random wishlist. Rather it was one of many prayers deeply hidden in my heart, which I felt I needed to share with Seri, my heart's other half.

"I want girls... I want twins."

Thankfully, God listened and granted them to me -- my two precious miracles.

Growing in a family dominated by military-trained males, having cutesy stuff in dainty pinks and bright florals were totally unheard of. But for some reason and in the back of my mind, I have always wondered how would it feel like to fix my little girls' hair in pigtails when their eomma is not around?

Or how tiring would it be to choose the perfect dollhouse for Christmas because I wanted to be sure they will like it? Or how rewarding would it be to receive sweet feathery kisses from my princesses after a long tiring day?

Or how fun would it be to have two mini Yoon Seri's swinging in my strong arms like they were monkey bars?

When Seri and I learned we are carrying twins girls, we both cried in joyful disbelief. After all the borders crossed and painful tears shed, at last we are here. We are finally making a family together.

We have our own children, who do not belong to the North or to the South. They belong to us and will be raised by us, Ri Jeong Hyeok and Yoon Seri.

When my daughters Ji-hye and Joo-hee were born and they gripped my finger for the first time, I knew my life would never be the same. At that very moment, they had me wrapped around their fingers.

And when together they smiled for the first time, my heart just melted at the sight of their crescent eyes and pair of dimples.

"Appa!!! Hungry!"
"Appa!!! Want cake!"

The high-pitched voices of my girls brought me back from my daytime musings. So before my pretty princesses turn into hungry little monsters, I lifted their two-tier rainbow cake and walked them to where their mother was.

My Seri. Smiling with both arms wide open, she welcomed our birthday girls in our bedroom. The twins gently rubbed their hands on their mother's protruded belly and kissed it. On bed rest, Seri's carrying our third miracle, a boy.

With just a birthday cake but lots of love, laughter, hugs and kisses, our twin's birthday was everything perfect.
