(My first poem contest entry. It was a Love Poem Contest for Valentines.) (Written in 2021)
Love Of a Mourning Dove
On a dark and gloomy day,
I heard a soothing melody.
It seemed lonely and to say,
"Love, it came heavenly."That sound that voice,
I longed to keep.
It left me no choice,
But to drop and weep.
I missed my little friend,
That sang with no end.It always was there,
Its song never wrong.
Giving thanks everywhere,
To me, for I raised him,
When it was abandoned,
Cold, his chances slim.I carefully took it up,
And brought him inside.
A little feathered lump,
That I had to provide,
The care of mother bird.
A weak chirp I heard,
That once, I had known. Then came that sunny day,
When he jumped and flew.
The beginning I knew few,
Of the time he flies away. Then I stood it in my hand,
Lifted him up into the sky.
Then he flew into clouds,
With a little coo goodbye.I have never seen him since.
My little Mourning Dove.
Then I heard a second voice,
Singing the same song.
That same coo made me rejoice,
I began to whistle along. When I looked into the tree,
I saw my little bird.
But now how handsome is he,
And his wife I had heard.
They were building a nest,
For little feathered chicks. Now my worried soul can rest,
And I can watch them grow.
My Little friend came back,
Memories of him long ago.____________________________________________________________
My inspiration for this poem is Mourning Doves.
I thought that since I Love birds this would work for the love poem contest.
I also chose Doves because they symbolize love and peace,
and they are less likely to be in someone else's poem like Love Birds.
The drawing is by me.
The video is so you can hear a Mourning Dove's coo.
