The next month of my life consisted of being Kane's perfect pet. I slept in the bed beside him, pressed against the wall out of fear that if I touch him, I'd burn. I got up when he did, ate when he did, sat in the apartment all day while he worked and went to bed again when he did.
The pills he had given me were incredible. I was rarely sick now and had started to regain my strength and some of the weight that I lost when I was being sick constantly. Kane and another man who was apparently a medical expert checked up on me quite a bit but Kane assured me the baby was healthy which was a relief.
Arguments were minimal because talking was kept to a minimum. He allowed me to visit Calla and my sister once a week and after I attempted to bargain for more time, he made threats until I backed down and accepted the deal.
During my second visit with Rose, I'd forced myself to tell her about the pregnancy. It was almost impossible to choke the words out and when I did, she stared at me, eyes wide and jaw dropped for a while.
Tears filled her eyes and for a while, she just cried, shaking her head, curled up on the floor of her cell while I stood on the opposite side, my hand to my stomach.
"Who?" She finally asked, wobbling to her feet and staring at me with so much pain in her eyes it made my heart crack.
I couldn't stop my gaze from sliding over to where Kane stood outside the cell, his arms crossed over his chest as he watched us talk. Rose's face dropped as her eyes flickered between me and him, horror drenching her features.
"Rose," I whispered softly, breaking the painful silence.
I made a move to step towards her as the horror drained away and all that was left in her expression was rage. Before I could move, she shot across the cell, her hand colliding with Kane's nose through the bars of the cell.
"Rose!" I yelled, shooting forward to pull her away as she redirected her fist to his eye.
Kane managed to move away before she gave him a black eye, however not quite quick enough because she managed to catch the side of his face before his own hand shot forwards and clasped around her throat.
He didn't waste any time, closing his hand around her windpipe and choking the life out of her. I screamed, running to them and desperately trying to pry his hand off of my sister while she gasped for air.
"Kane stop!" I begged when I failed, his grip tight. "Kane please!"
He reluctantly let go, forcing my sister backwards as she heaved in a gush of air. I ran to her, curling an arm around her before she could charge at him again. "Are you okay?" I asked her.
"I'm going to kill him," she snarled, fighting against me.
"Let's go," Kane growled from outside the cell, slotting the key in and swinging open the door. "Now."
"No!" Rose shook her head. "She's not going anywhere with you." My sister gripped my arm tightly, positioning herself between Kane and myself.
"Rose," I said, reaching to touch her cheek so she would turn to face me. "I'll be okay."
"Now!" Kane barked again and I threw my arms around my sister.
"I promise I'll be okay," I told her.
Kane grew impatient very quickly and stormed into the cell, grabbing my wrist and dragging me away from my sister and locking her back up. She didn't stop yelling as he hauled me away and I fought against him, desperate to reassure my sister that I was safe.
"Let go of me!" I snapped when I was thrown into apartment and he dropped my arm, a scowl on his face.
"You need to get your sister in line!" He snarled, storming past me and slamming a glass down on the counter.
I stared at him for a moment while he poured something into the glass and then tipped it down his throat. "She's even worse than you," he hissed.
"Sort her out," he said, turning to face me once again. "She may only care about one thing and that's you, and I can't hurt you while you're pregnant but I am more than happy to get rid of her. I don't need her so sort her out or you'll never see her again."
I opened my mouth to argue but he slammed the empty glass down and stormed into the bedroom, not waiting for my reply. Tears filled my eyes and despite the fact he couldn't see me, I nodded my head obediently. I wouldn't lose my sister. She was the only family I had left, she had always protected me.
The following week, Kane didn't accompany me to Rose's cell and sent one of his guys to watch over us instead. The second I arrived, my sister jumped up and threw her arms around me, bombarding me with questions.
"I'm fine," I repeated over and over again in answer to each question. "I promise."
"I was worried he wouldn't let you visit me again," she hissed, "I promise I'll get you away from him, we'll get out of here, I swear."
My eyes widened at her words and I shook my head. "Rose no," I said and she frowned.
"What?"
"You have to stop fighting him," I said, taking her hand. "He has everything that he needs, plenty of fertile women and he won't hesitate to get rid of one, especially one that causes him problems."
Her jaw clenched. "I'm not going to submit to him, no way."
A lump formed in my throat. "You have to," I said, tears in my eyes. "He's already using you as leverage over me and if you piss him off he'll happily kill you. I can't lose you Rose, please."
I couldn't stop the sob that burst from my throat and she pulled me to her, shushing me. "Please don't leave me."
"Hey," she called, tilting my chin so I was facing her. "I'm not going anywhere, I promise. I'll stop fighting the idiot," she spat and I laughed through my tears. "I just hate him for hurting you," she continued and I shook my head.
"I'm okay," I said, nuzzling against her, "all I can think about now is my child."
She nodded and squeezed my hand. "Are you scared?"
I nodded, biting my lip. "Yeah," I said with a shrug. "What if I have a daughter? I don't want her to live the same life as me," I sniffed, wiping the tears from my cheeks.
"You'll protect her," she said, stroking her thumb over my knuckles. "She'll always have you and she'll know that you love her and would do anything for her, Kath."
I nodded. She was right. All I could do was love my daughter and do everything I could to protect her. Our mother had always been there for us, but she was more scared of our father than we were and when his anger was directed at us, she wouldn't dare interfere. Watching her stand by, not even bothering to fight him while he beat us was heartbreaking. I refused to do that to my daughter. If I had a girl, I was do anything I could to protect her from Kane, no matter the consequences.
