Having the dogs in the apartment every day had significantly improved my mood. They did their best to sleep in the bed with us, providing a barrier between Kane and I. However, most of the time, he kicked them out at night and let them back in when he left in the morning.
He brought their food to the apartment and I fed them in the mornings and took them for walks around the facility and in the woods under Kane's supervision. It gave me something to do to pass the time and every now and then Kane allowed me to visit my sister and Calla.
He had started spending some of his time in the apartment, sitting at the small dining room table to do his work rather than his desk in the office. One day when he was, I was lay on the couch with the dogs when I startled, jumping up and putting my hands on stomach.
"What's wrong?" He asked, his eyes zeroed in on my stomach.
"The baby kicked," I whispered, tears filling my eyes while the dogs wagged their tails and stared at my stomach excitedly.
"What?" He growled, raising to his feet.
"The baby kicked," I stated again, a smile breaking onto my lips.
He crossed the room quickly, reaching his hand out towards my stomach with emotion flooding his face. Before he could reach me, the dogs began to snarl ferociously, snapping their teeth at Kane. He frowned and glared at me while I raised my hand to cover the smirk on my lips.
"Katherine!" He snapped and I released a small burst of laughter before reaching down and stroking the dogs in an attempt to calm them down.
He started to reach forward again and I held the dogs back until his hand rested on my stomach. It felt strange to feel him touch me again and I had to try not to flinch while we waited for the baby to kick again.
It didn't take long and when it happened, my breath hitched in my throat. I locked eyes on Kane and a wave of emotion hit me. Despite our hatred for each other, this baby connected us and we had a shared interest in its survival.
We were silent for a while before finally, he removed his hand. "Do you need anything?" He asked and I shook my head. "Alright, I'll be back later."
I nodded and watched him leave before settling back down onto the couch. The dogs snuggled up beside me and we stayed there for a while before there was a knock at the door. My lips tilted up into a smile as I watched Jak enter.
The dogs were a little weary of him still but they didn't bark at him like they did with any of the other men. He moved towards me and sat in the armchair opposite, a soft smile on his face. "How are you?"
"I'm okay," I told him with a nod.
"Good," he said, "you seem to be doing a lot better since taking those pills."
I nodded. "I am, thank you." He smiled in reply and I moved to sit up, trying to manoeuvre the dogs off of me. "Have you seen my sister?" I asked.
I watched his features droop and emotion flash across his eyes before he shook his head. "No I haven't," he answered.
"Jak?" I asked, feeling nervousness creep up the back of my throat.
He wouldn't meet my eyes and I started to panic, struggling to draw air into my lungs. "Jak?" I pleaded, "what's going on?"
He sighed heavily. "Kane is preparing to impregnate another round of girls," he admitted reluctantly, his eyes focused on the floor beside my feet. "Your sister is one of them."
I shook my head, knowing Rose would do whatever it took to stop anyone from hurting her. "No," I managed to splutter, my eyes filling with tears. "Does she know?"
He nodded slowly. "She tried to attack Kane, she's being treated right now."
My eyes widened. "What?" I gasped. "When was this?"
"Yesterday," he said with a heavy sigh, "she's fine, but it annoyed Kane and he fought back." He shook his head and leant back in the seat.
"Is she okay?" I asked him, raising to my feet, "I need to see her." I didn't wait for him to answer me before storming towards the door to the office, not having a clue where she would be but more than willing to search the whole building until I found her.
Before I could reach the door to the office, Jak's hand curled around my arm. "You can't Kath," he said, tugging me backwards.
"She's my sister!" I argued, trying to shake him off.
"And Kane is already angry, don't make it worse!" He snapped, shaking his head. "He has plenty of other women, if you push him he will push back and kill your sister and you know it."
"So I'm just supposed to sit here and do nothing?" I asked and he nodded.
"You're pregnant Kath. Your sister can take care of herself, you need to think about what's best for you and your baby and right now, that's staying on Kane's good side."
As much as I hated to admit it, I knew Jak was right. Kane had been kind recently, as kind as he possibly could be. I was free to leave the apartment whenever I wanted to walk the dogs, he'd allowed them to stay so I wasn't alone and there hadn't been any arguments recently.
"You knew this would happen eventually," Jak muttered, "he needs as many women to get pregnant as possible. It was inevitable that your sister would be one of them."
I nodded in reply and spent the rest of the day sulking. I ignored Kane when he came back to the apartment and went straight to bed without a word. Fortunately, this wasn't much different to our usual encounters and he wasn't the least bit suspicious.
The following day, I needed some time outside the apartment and took the dogs for a walk around the building. The halls were quiet and I presumed the men were all in the basement training when I saw nobody outside.
I decided to make my way towards the cells to see if my sister was back in hers but on the way, I was pulled down a small hallway, a hand clamped over my mouth. I struggled against their hold and the dogs barked loudly, alerting anyone within earshot that I was in danger.
"Sh!" Roses voice sounded in my ears and when I managed to break free, I turned to see her finger to her lips, shaking her head with wide eyes.
"What are you doing?" I hissed, assessing her for injuries while she was in front of me. Her face was bruised and a small gash split across her cheek but other than that, she looked okay.
"Shhh, you need to quieten them down!" She begged, turning to the dogs that were still barking at us. I crouched down and grabbed them, pulling them towards me and stroking them in an attempt to calm them down.
"How did you get out?" I asked her, peering behind her to see the rest of the girls.
"There was no security in the hospital, I let Kane beat the crap out of me so I wouldn't be shoved back in my cell," she explained quickly, reaching for me and pulling me into a hug.
"So you're okay?" I asked her and she nodded.
"I'm okay. He just cracked a few ribs and I've got some bruises but I'm alright. Are you?"
I nodded in response before looking back at the rest of the girls. "You're all out? He's going to go mad," I said, feeling panic in my chest.
"Doesn't matter," Rose said, shaking her head, "we're leaving. Right now."
