"Wake up!" A voice growled in front of me and I stirred, lifting my head slowly. I fluttered my eyes open and startled when I came face to face with a man.
He grinned as the memories from the day before came flooding back and a twinge of dread settled in my stomach. I glanced around the camp and saw everyone collecting their weapons and untying the rest of the girls.
I glowered up at the man above me. "Are we leaving?"
He smirked. "Yep."
"Without your leader?" I asked, nodding towards the dead body in the floor between me and my fuming best friend.
The man glanced towards the body, frowning before turning back to me and laughing loudly. "You thought he was our leader?"
My eyes widened and I looked to him with confusion. "Oh no, he is the leader of this team... our boss is back at the base and he will be thrilled when he finds out their are women alive," he said.
Another man stepped up beside him and smirked. "Especially fertile women."
I snarled up at them, the thought of being used as a means to reproduce causing a stabbing feeling through my chest. I would do whatever I had to do to ensure that I wouldn't go back to being a submissive slave to any man. They began to untie the ropes that bound me to the tree trunk tightly. Once I was free, I made a move to grab a weapon but arms quickly pinned me against the tree.
I thrashed around, desperate to get away but once again, ropes quickly wound around my wrists. The man that woke me up smirked down at me and then began to tug me along behind the rest of his team.
I remained silent as I was lead through the forest, my mind wandering to thoughts of my sister. She would be worried sick around now, having no idea where we were or what had happened. As far as she knew, we were the only humans alive.
"Five miles!" Someone from the front of the group called and nerves fluttered in my stomach. The only small slither of hope I had was that they wouldn't kill the only remaining women and destroy their chances of continuing the human race. Yet that did little to comfort me.
These man were big. Bigger than any of the women in the base and that meant strong. Not only that but their weapons were more advanced than ours and they had a position to uphold.
Ahead of me, I noticed Calla begin to resist, digging her heels into the ground. "Move!" The man behind her ordered, forcing her forward and stumbling over the leg she held out.
She slipped from his grip as he wobbled about, attempting to stay on his feet. In a second, my best friend had swiped the gun from his pocket and had it aimed at him.
The man behind me forced me forward, ready to intervene when I swung my leg back into his shin and shimmied out of his arms. Once I was free, I turned and slammed my fist into his nose, causing him to stumble backwards from the force.
"Crap that hurt," I muttered, turning to Calla who was still pointing the gun at one of the men.
I stepped beside her, preparing to fight off anyone that came near me. The man I had punched lowered his hands from his face to reveal crimson red staining his face and I smirked, feeling proud despite the severe pain it caused my knuckles.
The clicking sound of his gun reminded me that I hadn't won yet and I watched as Calla turned to aim her gun at him. "Put it down," he growled to her while the other men pulled out their own weapons.
"Not a chance," she answered, holding the weapon steadily.
"Put it down or I shoot!" The man warned her, his blood dripping down and staining his teeth. "Now!"
"You need us alive," Calla hissed, glancing at the rest of our small team who were still captured and bound. "Let them go."
The man scoffed. "Not happening."
"We don't need you alive, we have everything we need to continue the human race but you need us. I'm not going to ask again, let them go."
A smirk crossed his face and he took a threatening step forward. "We only need one of you. One female to reproduce every nine months, put the gun down or I kill these girls and the role falls to you."
I watched Calla tense beside me, her anger seeping out of her. The man shrugged. "Fine, kill her," he ordered the man who had Tina bound before him.
My eyes widened as he pulled out his revolver and aimed it at Tinas head. The man turned back to us. "Go ahead, call my bluff," he said.
Calla grit her teeth and turned to me. I shot her a look and with a sigh, she dropped the gun to the ground with a clatter.
"Good girl," he hissed, grabbing her roughly and forcing her forward. "Grab that one," he instructed and three men swarmed me, grabbing my arms and hauling me after them.
We walked for another hour or so before coming across a large glass building situated on the outskirts of the forest. It was two stories high and mostly concealed by trees, not giving away how far back it stretched.
"Don't you think hiding out in a glass building is a bit of a dumb idea?" I asked, looking around the men.
"With nothing to hide from? No," one of them answered with a shrug and I frowned.
"Lets go, I'm sure the boss would love you meet you," the man with the bloody nose snapped, forcing Calla forward towards the wide open doors.
Inside, men crowded around the entrance, watching in fascination as we were shoved inside. The room was large with all glass surrounding us, allowing the sunlight to flood in.
"What is everyone staring at?" A deep, harsh voice boomed from behind the crowds somewhere. I glared in the general direction, watching the crowds part until the man who's voice it belonged to stepped up before me.
