Flashback chapter

It was a peaceful silence that made up the day's night, stars here and there lighting up the sky, but even in the midst of the peace, it is always followed by the sense of danger.

I ran as fast as my legs could take me, the smell of blood lingered in the air, you don't even need a good nose to tell, past the trees, jumping over branches here and there, but even so, I could still hear his voice,

'Get over here you insolent child!'

I blinked back any tears forming, some were already confused as to why a 16-year-old teen was running as if her life depended on it. And it did.

I honestly didn't care where I would end up, just far enough from them.
Anywhere but back to that stupid Manor, I cursed under my breath as I scratch my arms and legs by the bushes.
Anything but to go back there, and I was desperate. But to keep drowning myself in a household of shame where all you learn is how to make others feel guilty, 'Work hard F/N!' Well, they can eat shit for all I care at this point.
I start hearing more noises, hooves. They got horses, talk about unfair.
Nevertheless, I go down a more narrow path, containing more twigs and bushes, but it'll stop them.

My kimono was getting all ripped, I was only wearing socks too, the rocks that dug into my feet hurt each time I take a step, but I can't give up...not now.

More leaves and twigs start to appear the more I make my way up, leading me to use my arms as a shield. Slowly I start to hear the noises die down, my hair is all messed up with more hair sticking out of what's supposed to be a neat bun. I keep running a little more until I'm sure enough that they won't know where I was.

I fall and turn back up to the trees that were covering the sky, just now did I notice the spiderwebs that litter each branch and leaf. How odd.

'A human..?'
An eerie voice called out near me, but I honestly didn't have the energy to be aware of anything at this point. I lazily lifted my torso and left it against a tree, getting a view of who was in front of me,
A young boy it seems. He had pale, practically white skin, with a spider web kimono... One of his eyes were covered by his white hair and the other was odd. Then I realised, I have heard about demons and what they do, their appearances... But it was the first time I had ever met one, though he didn't attack me right away, I was still cautious.

'You-you're a demon...why aren't you attacking me?'

'I'm interested in you, you have a different-what is it called..? Aura.'

Different aura?

I looked at the boy confused, he suddenly seemed less cold from earlier,

'Rui.'

Huh?

'My name is Rui... You are..?'

Oh,

'L/N F/N,' I tried to stand but the boy stopped me,
'Stop, you are hurt...'
I raised a brow, 'and why do you care?'

Rui stopped for a moment before looking at the ground, then looking back up at me,
'You have... A warm feeling, almost like- a mothers love for a child,'

My eyes widen but I smiled at Rui, he looked much less cold than before, he looks shy, humble almost. He walked toward me and took my right hand, I got the hint and followed wherever he was taking me. We were walking for about five minutes until we reached an old house, he took me inside and had gotten some bandages and medical items needed to heal my wounds,
He started patching up the deep cuts on my arms, then the scratches. Once he was finished he sat in front of me, as if to start a conversation.

'If you are lost you can just tell me where you live... I'll help you with the directions to your village,'

'I don't think that would be needed. I- really don't want to go back there...' I looked back at the ground below, waiting for a reply. When I didn't get one I looked back up to see Rui messing around with the hem of his sleeve,
I had an urge, so I did so.

I pulled the boy into a soft hug, I felt his muscles stiffen at the sudden contact but then relaxed as he puts his arms around my back, hugging me in return,
I felt like an older sister, and it wasn't bad, I pat Rui's head gently as he start to doze off, I honestly didn't think demons could sleep but... Eventually, I started to doze off too, but one thing I did promise myself that night,

Was that I would do anything for Rui. And he needed it. He needed someone to care for him even if I wouldn't be there all the time. At least he knows someone is there to care for him.
