I'm the first one to arrive to class, as always. Berdly shows up next. Then most of my classmates rush in 5 minutes before class starts. The bell rings. No Susie. No Kris. It's common for Susie to be late and it's not abnormal for Kris to be late, either, but Kris has always been on time for the first day of school! I hope they're ok. Still, I couldn't help but wonder Where's Susie? Is she ok? What if she's sick? Maybe then I could give her what she missed and get a chance to talk to her!
"Noelle!" I looked up. Everyone was looking at me.
"Noelle, I've called your name three times now." Ms. Alphys sighed, impatiently.
"Oh! Sorry, Ms. Alphys! I'm present!" I responded quickly. Ms. Alphys began to tell us about a project that would be due soon. Everyone began to talk and find their partner. I already knew my partner would be Berdly. Even if Ms. Alphys let us pick our partners, I would be too shy to tell Berdly that I wanted to work with someone else. I didn't want to hurt his feelings. I sighed and glanced back at Susie's empty desk then looked back to the front of the room. The door to the classroom swung open and Kris walked in. Phew. They're alright.
"Oh! Kris! I was just telling the class about your upcoming group project. Why don't you walk around and find someone to work with?" Ms. Alphys suggested. Kris began to walk around and ask each of our classmates if they had a partner. When everyone else had turned them down, Kris came to me.
"Hey, Kris. I was wondering where you were! Do you want me to ask Ms. Alphys if we can make a group of three?" I asked kindly. Kris nodded and I raised my hand.
"Yes, Noelle?" Ms. Alphys said when she noticed my hand.
"Well... um... Kris doesn't have a partner and I was wondering if we could make a group of three?"
"Of course! Just make sure-" Ms. Alphys was interrupted by a loud slam. The classroom door was open and standing in the doorway was Susie. We made eye contact and I started to blush. I looked away. She's so perfect. How does she manage to look so pretty by just standing there? I wonder how she gets her bangs to swoop like that?
"Susie! There you are! You can be partners with Kris. Now that that's settled, we can start the lesson." Our teacher smiled at Susie and turned to the chalkboard. Susie dragged her feet on the way to her desk and plopped into her chair. I turned and smiled at her, and to my surprise, she smiled back. I blushed.
"Guys, you kn-know I need the chalk t-to start the lesson. C-can whoever took the chalk give it b-back now?" Ms. Alphys stuttered as she spoke. She isn't good with confrontation. She sighed.
"F-fine. Susie can you go get the chalk, since you came in last?"
"I guess." Susie muttered in a deep voice that made me blush again. She got up and walked out of the room.
"Kris can you go with her to make sure she... um... actually gets the chalk?" Alphys sighed and sat down. Kris got up silently and walked out of the room. But neither of them came back.
The next day, they had returned but no one asked about where they had gone.
