TW: mention of sexual assault

DIANE'S POV:

I looked down to Lou's text and I had to control myself and not giggle in gay panic as I stared at what she was 'wearing to the shower'... I turned off my phone, cleared my throat and looked at my mother's eyes as if I had not just seen a nude picture of my younger girlfriend.

"Lou told me you helped her get a new therapist." I put my phone back inside my purse and took a piece of my chocolate muffin.

"I did. I figured that we're practically family now that you're with her." Jillian said and smiled friendly.

I mumbled an approving sound, and looked elsewhere from my mother's new ring. I didn't wanna know.

"You look great. Like you're glowing." She commented.

"Yeah, must be the vitamins." Not because I was fucked for the past nine nights in a row.

My girlfriend was an incredible switch, she was great at being passive and great at taking control and I loved that.

She giggled nervously, as if she knew.  "That symptom was kind of my favorite."

I cringed and hoped our little meeting could get over as soon as possible.

"Mom." My eyes were widened in amusement at that comment.

"What? You're an adult, you know I have a sex life like the rest of the world."

"It's disturbing and disgusting to acknowledge that." I said.

There was silence for a second before she spoke, "Have you talked to Soph?"

"Not much."

"She said she'd like you to be the godmother. Of course it's probably not gonna happen because Chris isn't too on board. He wants to name his cousin as the godmother."

"Well, I don't really mind if I'm chosen or not."

"You should be flattered."

"You should mind your own business."

"You're still pissed about me showing up at dinner."

"Bingo. I am. I don't even know why you wanted me here, this early in a Sunday morning."

"You've always been an observant child, you know I'm wearing a new ring in a certain finger."

"If it is what I thought you could have sent an invitation to your engagement party or just email."

"I was going to, but George and I talked and decided that it was best I told you face to face."

"Ah, he has a name!" I said sarcastically.

"Yes, he does!" She replied just as sarcastically. "Anyway, Happy Birthday."

I pursed my lips and let her get away without me screaming at her one more time. I didn't understand why I kept saying yes to lunches and coffee dates with her when I knew she drove me crazy.

My birthday was tomorrow, and I wasn't excited about it. I never was.

It was the day of the year in which relatives called to wish you good or send cards, and all I wanted was a chill day, nothing extraordinary about it.

"Thanks." I muttered and devoured the rest of my muffin.

I dropped the keys on the counter, took off my shoes, lighted a cigarette and walked to my backyard and sat down in a chair.
