The Job

It had been a couple of days since the party at camp, Ruth didn't like seeing how miserable all the drinkers were the morning after, although she couldn't help but laugh when she woke Bill up and he said something along the lines of his mouth tasting like a dogs ass.

How did he know what that tastes like?

Aside from that, Ruth exchanged lots of glances and short conversations with Kieran.

They hadn't been as close as they were since that night.

It felt a little intimate, in Ruth's eyes anyway. She felt embarrassed about her actions and was truthfully worried to spend time with Kieran again.

It was a shame, really. Because Ruth wanted nothing more than to pester Kieran about his apparent low alcohol tolerance. She liked to poke fun when she could.

Regardless, she pushed on with her day.

Although, an odd sight caught her eye.

Kieran and Bill were having a conversation.

Ruth didn't know what it was about but it appeared there were no threats or arguing between the two.

A sight to behold.

She quickly averted her gaze and paced off when Bill looked in her direction.

"So you'll actually do it?" Kieran asked with anticipation.

"Of course I will!" He said snidely, disapproving of—what Bill assumed was—Kierans implied mistrust.

"Oh thank you, Mister!" He said in a relieved and grateful tone.

"But if she screws anything up, then you're on your own!" He told him sternly.

Kieran brought his hands up in front of his chest in defence.

"Alright, that's fair." He took a step back. "You oughta find her and let her know."

Bill scratched his beard and turned away.

"I will." He mumbled.

Kieran felt content, he let his chest puff out in pride as he strode through camp to do his usual business

Ruth had situated herself on her bedroll, her legs folded neatly. She was patching up holes on some garments that some of the boys had left her.

Ruth wasn't much of a seamstress, so she'd cuss out the occasional expletive quietly when she pricked her finger with the needle.

"I might as well be sewing myself to these men's clothes." She sighed to herself.

She felt eyes on her, so she turned to see Bill walking toward her.

Her face flushed.

She didn't know why she felt so intimated by him today.

Maybe it was because she was staring and he caught her.

She set her project down and stood herself up.
