"Whew.. these men sure do go through clothes." Ruth huffed as she scrubbed, she was stationed with Miss Gaskill washing clothes.
"Surprised they even have this many." She chimed in with a smile.
"So, how've you been?" Ruth asked, attempting to at least get to know the other women.
"I've been fine. A bit bored. What about you?"
Ruth was interrupted when she heard the call of her matriarch. It wasn't directed towards her, but it caught her attention.
"Mr. Morgan, Mr. Matthews, welcome back." Susan greeted them.
Mary-Beth giggled, seeing Ruth get distracted.
"Got your eye, hasn't he?"
Ruth looked at her.
"Excuse me?"
"Arthur, the younger man? You're staring."
Ruth began to blush.
"I wasn't staring like that, I was only looking."
"I'm only teasing, Miss Bucker."
After Ruth's face cooled down, she peeked up at Mary-Beth then back down at the laundry.
"Where'd they go?" Ruth asked.
"I think they went hunting."
"They were sure gone a couple of days." She replied to her.
"That's the standard. Arthur's usually out and about. It's rare to see him around camp." Mary-Beth told her.
"I've noticed. I don't think I've talked to him at all yet."
"Well, why don't you? If you see him when he's not busy go say hi!" Mary-Beth encouraged.
Ruth got nervous. "Maybe.. if I can catch him while he's relaxing."
A cool breeze swept through camp and it sent a chill up Ruth's spine, making her visibly shiver
Mary-Beth noticed.
"Here, we ain't got much left to do so.. you go warm up by the fire and I'll do the rest."
"You don't have to do that Mary-Beth, I'll be fine. It's just a little chill."
She reached a hand over to her shoulder, giving her a slight shake.
"Go get warm."
Ruth gave her a grateful glance.
"Alright, I will. Thank you, Miss Gaskill."
Ruth rose to her feet dusting off her skirt as she did, then made her way to the scout campfire just behind the girls' wagon. She knelt down in front of the flame, reaching her hands out to feel the warmth. She let her eyes wander the area, looking at each horse that gathered around.
She heard the crunch of twigs under a boot behind her and she turned to see Arthur picking up a large hay bale. She still felt too nervous to say hello just yet.
Nonetheless, he walked by her to get to the horses, the bale held firmly in his arms. He didn't seem to pay her any mind as he had passed, he just moved on and took the other bale to the horses on the other side of camp.
"Ruth?"
She turned away from the fire to see Mary-Beth.
"Yes?"
"We're done here. Let's go find something else to do."
Ruth nodded and walked up next to her and they made their way through camp.
