The plane continued to make stops until all 50 children had been collected, well theoretically. The Inspector discovered that, for 4 of his "subjects" death with their family was preferable to an uncertain future with him.
Jaziline got to know 3 other girls sitting around her, Felícita, Araja, and Nya. They all had siblings they had left and understood the pain of it. I
Calypsa turned out to be a funny, confident girl and told them about the twin sister who she had left, Zoë.
After a while all conversation faded and they sat is silence until the voice of the Inspector came on the speakers,
"The academy where you will be trained is on a spaceship an hour away. I recommend settling in, when we arrive I will explain why, where, and what you are here for." With that his voice clicked away.
So that's where we're going to live, she mused, A spy academy on a spaceship. Who would have thought.
"Wild isn't it," said a voice tinged with a British accent from beside Jaziline. She turned to her left and saw a boy sit down in the seat next to her.
He was tall, with dirty blonde hair and brown eyes. He excluded an air of easy confidence and humor, "So princess, what's your name?"
"Jaziline, what's yours?"
"Samuel, can I call you Jaz?"
The old nickname stung, but she pushed thoughts of her family away. "Depends, can I call you Sam?"
"It's a deal princess."
"Did you leave a family for this, Sam?" Asked Jaziline
"Just a foster family, they actually begged the Inspector to take one of their children instead of me. 'Please, he's nothing special, but Kelly is a cheerleader and Brandon does football, they're very athletic and smart.'"
"Ouch, did he tell them to get lost?"
"Actually it was, 'I'm afraid there is nothing special about your children, unlike Samuel, they are less than average.'"
"Wow, so he's not so bad." Jaziline sighed "I really needed someone to hate."
Calypsa, who was beside her, laughed, "You could hate them," She pointed at a random person in the group around them.
"No thanks, my hate is a fearsome thing. I'd hate to inflict it on an innocent."
The two laughed at that, "I'm Samuel, by the way." He offered.
"Calypsa, nice to meet you."
"You too, did you leave any family?" asked Samuel
"My parents, and my twin sister."
"Wow that must have been hard."
"It was." Calypsa said shortly, a clear end to the conversation.
"What about you princess. Did you leave any family?" Inquired Samuel
"Yes, I had two younger siblings, before."
"Do you think that is going to become our new system of measurement?" Mused Calypsa
"What?"
"When people talk about time, like you just did, will there just be a before, and an after."
The three fell into a thoughtful silence, each contemplating that grim prospect. After about 30 minutes the Inspector's voice came back on the speaker.
"We have arrived at the academy."
There was a flurry of movement as all the people aboard the ship turned to look out the windows. The academy was a large silver ship that would definitely be able to comfortably house the 46 children.
The children began to disembark.
A/N: New character, Samuel Rowan Lilon, played by Thomas Brodie-Sangster. I promise chapters are going to start getting longer, hopefully.
