Chapter VII

"Carry the two," Chubs instructed Zu, who was doing math problems in her notebook. "And then multiply that by... Good, that's it!" He said proudly.

I glanced behind me to see Zu smiling happily next to Chubs. She started writing out the answers to the next problem.

It was the day after we had left the motel and currently, Liam was driving to — somewhere. He and Chubs had been having hushed conversations,  but I hadn't been able to hear what they'd said.

I was interrupted from my musing by Zu's stomach growling. She blushed slightly, but I handed her a bag of Doritos. At my action, Zu smiled brightly and shared the chips with me.

I idly stared out of the rolled down passenger seat window. The wind was lightly blowing through the windows, ruffling my hair. I glanced out again, but tensed up when I saw a grey jeep not too far behind us.

"Guys," I said calmly, my voice not reflecting the panic that burst inside of me. "I think we're being followed."

Simultaneously, Zu, Chubs, and Liam all glanced in the rear view mirror.

"Maybe it's not anything bad," Liam tried to reason. "Don't panic."

"It's always something bad," Chubs muttered dryly.

Zu tugged on my shirt sleeve and nodded her head to the mirror once more. You almost couldn't see it, but there were two men sitting in the front of the jeep. And they had guns.

"I think it might be bad," I said, scratching my wrist.

Apparently I jinxed us all, because just then a shot rang out, narrowly missing Black Betty.

Liam pressed on the gas pedal, and with a squeal of the tires we were speeding forward. We lurched ahead so quickly that Chubs smacked his forehead against the window and moaned while Zu toppled out of her seat.

The jeep was gaining momentum, and was quickly behind us. Two more shots fired and one hit the back window.

"This is definitely bad!" Chubs yelled.

"Liam, there's a turn coming up on your right!" I called, gripping the handlebar tightly. "If we're lucky, they won't be able to make it in time and we'll find a place to hide."

Heeding my words, Liam swerved sharply, the car very nearly tipping now the process. Chubs let out a rather loud shriek, Zu's face was devoid of any blood, and my head similarly smacked against the window, like Chubs' had earlier.

"Sorry!" Liam said sheepishly, as if the whole ordeal hadn't phased him.

"I think I enjoy Mystery's driving
than yours," Chubs snarked.

I sighed. "Is that name gonna stick?"

"Don't worry about it, Sunshine," Liam said.

Wow, two nicknames.

"By the way, thanks for letting me know about that turn," Liam continued. "If you hadn't been there, we totally would have missed it."
