CHAPTER SEVENTEEN: BAKING COOKIES
-
The next day, time seemed to rush by, and at 4:02 p.m, the doorbell got Angel out of her trance. She'd spent about an hour reading a book, snuggled up on her sofa after coming up with a plan of what the two of them could do together that day. Before that, she used the time to begin packing — mostly to distract her from asking herself the question that had haunted her since yesterday afternoon. Her two suitcases were now ready, waiting beside her closet in her bedroom.
She rushed to the door and buzzed the visitor in.
"Hi," she gushed as Steve appeared in her field of sight, and he faintly smiled at her. He kicked off his wet shoes and then proceeded to walk over to her, cup her face, and kiss her. Angel felt her eyelids fluttering shut. Her lips curled upward, her body melted against his despite the wetness of his snow-covered jacket.
When he pulled away, she left her eyes closed, letting the sensation linger for a moment longer. She'd almost forgotten about the question that spooked around in her head.
"Sorry for taking off so suddenly last night, I had lost track of time," he apologized, and Angel nodded.
"It's okay, I guess," she muttered, "That happens."
He gratefully looked at her with soft eyes before backing off to get rid of his coat and scarf. She watched each of his actions carefully. She wondered again how he could be so effortlessly attractive while just hanging up his stupid jacket. His face was soft and kind when he turned back to her.
"So," he began when he approached her again, now only in black jeans and a navy blue sweatshirt. Some thick, blue socks made his steps almost inaudible on the wooden floors. "Any specific plans for today?"
Angel smiled up at him, her hands stroking the fabric of his shirt. She had come up with this plan while trying to fall asleep last night. It was the perfect Christmas activity.
"We could bake some cookies," she suggested, making Steve cock his head to the side in contemplation.
"Oh, that does sound tempting."
"I have my grandma's recipe, they're going to be amazing," Angel said before going up on her tiptoes to bring her face closer to his. Her hands held onto his shoulders for support as she continued to talk.
"We don't have to stick to just baking, though," she teasingly muttered, earning a groan from the back of Steve's throat. His hands on her waist, he pulled her closer to her, bringing their lips together once more.
"That sounds like a plan," he agreed hoarsely. Angel backed away and took his hand, entwining their fingers to pull him to the kitchen.
"I always used to bake something fun during Christmas time for my family," she revealed while getting out the ingredients. She then pointed to the fridge, where the recipe stuck to the door with a red magnet. Steve examined the steps thoroughly, scratching his beard that by now was much more than a simple stubble.
