"Oi! Eliana! Get your lazy butt out of bed and let down that hair of yours!"
"Hang on Uncle, I'm coming!" I shouted cheerfully back down the tower.
I had no idea why I was still cheerful after having spent all my life locked up in this stone tower in the middle of nowhere.
Still, I would never dream of questioning Merlin why, for he seemed stressed and annoyed. Thinking about it, he must get a lot of sleep, for I would have thought it to be extremely rare for someone that stressed to look so youthful.
I put my paintbrush down and covered up the wall I had been painting on. I chucked my hair out of the only window in the tower, and it fell just above the ground. I flinched as I felt him begin to climb up my long black locks, making his way up the tower.
Another thing that confused me was why we didn't just get some freaking stairs, but Uncle Merlin told me that wasn't a question silly little girls like me should be asking, and that I should just do as I was told. And so I did.
My days alone were spent brushing my hair (a lot) and painting somewhere on the wall, then painting over it again so Uncle Merlin didn't get mad. I did have Zelle, a small milk snake that sometimes crawled through the window and kept me company. In the evenings, my uncle would brush my hair, and always ask me to sing my special song.
Flower gleam and glow, let your power shine. Make the clock reverse, bring back what once was mine. Heal what has been hurt, change the fate's design. Save what has been lost, bring back what once was mine. What once was mine.
No one really knows where I got my song from, but I have known it for as long as I can remember, which is almost 18 years.
Finally, after what seemed like forever of Uncle Merlin tugging at my hair, his scowl appeared at the window. He grunted as a welcome, then came into the spacey room.
"Uncle..." I began.
"What is it?" he sighed in reply.
"Well you may have remembered, but tomorrow is my eighteenth birthday, and, um, I was wondering if I could go out into the city? Just for my birthday?" I smiled and looked into his eyes. They were cold and sinister.
"No, Eliana, I've told you, you can't leave the tower. You just can't!"
I felt like crying, but just nodded in agreement, then ran up to my room before he could see the tears fall down my cheeks.
Suddenly, there was a knock at my window, soft, but in the silent room it was clear and loud. I wandered over, expecting to find Zelle, my small companion, however to my suprise, it was a boy.
I looked at him suspiciously. Other than my uncle, and the very few people who pass by the tower, I had never seen another human being before now, and it made me wonder if they all looked this good. He had blonde hair and blue eyes, with a fair skin tone and a few freckles. He had climbed up the wall using the uneven stones as stepping stones, and was now face to face with me.
"Who are you?" I quizzed.
"I'm Harvey, and I spotted your tower from out in the kingdom. as a curious fellow, I wandered over to see you giving that nasty old bag a lift up to your room with your hair. I had to see you. Now I hear you want to venture out into the city?"
Taken aback with this sudden wash of information, i nodded in reply.
"Well, when your uncle is out, let down your hair for me tomorrow and together we will venture out into the city together," He whispered, conscious of the closeness of my uncle.
"Why? Why would you do this for me?" I asked, stunned.
"I haven't the slightest clue! Maybe a thirst for adventure? But will you come with me? Out into the city?" His eyes were wide and full of so much excitement that it actually excited me!
I don't know what I was thinking, but I said yes.
And with that he was gone.
