Millie was my best friend for a long time, but it felt like there was something between us.
It could have been something interesting, but we didn't have any of that. She wasn't the right person because I never saw her as my partner.
But let me describe it to you. I took her for an outside walk just to stroll outside, see what there's to see.
"Have you ever been outside the base?"
"No... I always stay inside. I'm just a nurse girl. Haha."
"I can tell you have good medical experience. But what about shooting?"
"I can... get the job done. I don't focus on doing damage, I just put down whatever runs at me.""That's fine. It's very important to protect yourself from whatever comes at you, have your guns and have your medic bag, boom, we're good."
"Yeppers."
There was no explaining how awkward it was.
"Well, what are you doing tomorrow?"
"Erm... work. I can't come by for the rest of the week."
"What?! Why?"
"I'm moving out of here for work and I'll be back on Sunday."
"Millie! You're gonna miss everything, we're having that huge party on Friday too, you even said you wouldn't miss it no matter what!"
"I know. It's a lot of work and I know you're busy too. I don't wanna leave a weight on your shoulders."
"You never told me anything though. What kind of work is this?"
"The guys on the frontlines. We lost a lot of good people out on the border."
"Huh?"
"The Windsor/Detroit border. We have to stop them moving up north, but I'm in charge of keeping our people safe. Not fighting."
"Let me come with you. I have to."
"CONNER! Chill out. You're a good guy, I know. It's my responsibility this time, I don't want you to get yourself into this."
... Is she mad at me?
"I get it. I'm sorry. Good luck."
"Thanks, Conner."
I walk away slowly, and I don't even realize my voice deepening.
"It's... okay, Millie. Keep your innocence."
