Two Are Required

I feel the top of the blade pierce my skin and feel the blood drip down my chest. I'm in absolute agony but I can't scream as Grayson won't let off. I won't pass out which means he must be leaving just enough room so that I can breathe just barely. A smart move indicating that he's done this before. I feel the blade cut deeper and deeper and it hurts with every sawing motion my father inflicts. Just then I hear a scream but not just any scream, a man's scream; one I've never heard before. I look up at my father and Grayson to reveal they aren't the ones screaming. My heart pounds in my chest, forcing more blood outside the cut in my skin. My adreanaline soars to new heights and my mind goes blank as I realize who is screaming. Jake. I feel the blade stop for a moment as my father looks over to him. He moves the blade one more time while still gazing in that direction and Jake let's out another brief scream that is filled intense pain. Just then he jumps back, ripping the blade from my chest, sending another wave of agony over me.
"Hmm." My father says puzzled as he looks around. "Was I just electrified?" He looks at Grayson and nods. Grayson finally backs off of me and I gasp for air immediately until my lungs stop burning. I turn my head in Jake's direction as my father walks slowly up to him.
"Don't touch him!!" I yell at my father.
"Shut up, wretch." Grayson says to me. I look at him with disgust for a second before returning my gaze to Jake. He looks at me as if he's desperate but for what, I do not know. My father commands the Nightwalker to stand down as he kneels next to Jake and observes him intently. He grabs the front of his shirt and pulls him up before Jake harshly forces Dad's hand away from him. Father motions for Grayson to come forward and then pushes Jake into him. Grayson locks his arms under Jake's and carries him to another metallic table just to the the left of me as Jake thrashes around, trying to break free. As they strap him down, using a lot more force than was necessary for me, I zone out into my mind for a minute. I think about why I keep calling that traitor of a man, father. He isn't my father any longer and hasn't been for quite sometime since he started trying to kill me. He doesn't deserve the title of "father" anymore so I decide to call him by his real name, Alastor.
I am soon whisked back to reality when I hear Jake yell in struggle. They finally get him strapped down in the following minutes and then father, no, Alastor wraps something looking to be black and plastic around Jake's arm. Grayson leans back against his wall as Alastor leaves the room for reasons, I don't know. I look intently at Jake as he does the same to me. He doesn't look distressed though. He looks as though he's trying to tell me he's got a plan and we'll be okay. I decide to trust this look from him and calm down only a minuscule amount. Alastor is back in no time with an expressionless face.
"Well this is quite interesting." He exclaims.
"What?" I respond back, irritated. He stands between me and Jake as he explains. "It seems as though Jake's heart is emitting the same amount of radiation particles your heart is emitting, Rachel."
"So what?" Jake says angrily.
"It would seem as though your hearts are connected which would also make sense why you guys get along so well. Not only are your hearts connected, but your souls, your beings are as well. What I never told you, Rachel, is that you and Jake were born on the same day and if I knew Jake's parents as well as I thought I did, they would want the same thing for Jake that me and your mother wanted for you, Rachel. So I'm thinking that the doctors made a double batch, so to speak, of whatever made Rachel immune in order to make Jake immune as well. It appears to be apparent that the planet needs more radiation particles to be emitted than previously thought to stay alive and sense that much radiation for one heart would kill one person, it split it between two." This new information shocked me. I focused my attention on Jake for a split second and we both shared a confused but stunned expression.
"Wait, wait, wait." Jake said. "So to recap, me and Rachel are connected. Both our hearts emit these radiation particles that are keeping the planet alive because it's too much for one person to handle and would result in death."
"Correct." Alastor reassures as he carasses his own chin with his finger tips. Jake laughs before he continues. "How do you expect to accomplish your goal then? If it's too much for only Rachel and only myself, how do you plan on handling it?" He laughs again and Grayson rushes forward, grabbing Jake's throat.
"Let...Him...Go." I say sternly as anger rises up in me. Alastor sweeps one of his tables clean sending all the glass crashing to floor and breaking into a million tiny peices. He yells at the top of his lungs, "SILENCE". Grayson backs off Jake with a livid look on his face as Jake struggles for air again.
"Now. I'll tell you what I intend to do." He says as he leans over me again.
"Your guys' stay is gonna be extended. I need the time to create a new machine that can handle the amount of radiation on its own plus a second machine I can use that will extract your hearts at the same time so I can protect myself from that puzzling electric feature that prevented me from doing anything to your heart, Rachel." This information confused me but I didn't meditate on it.
"Now. I'm gonna go brainstorm in the back. Grayson..." Grayson glanced in his direction. "...You know what to do." An evil smile then creeped across Grayson's face as Alastor left the room. He immediately went to work unstrapping Jake and struggling to sit him against the wall as Jake pushed back with all the fight he had. Grayson eventually succeeded and ordered the Nightwalker to guard him once more. Jake sat as still as the air when the wind is at bay. Grayson was quicker unstrapping me as I couldn't push back with nearly as much force Jake could. Once I was free, he picked me up by my shoulders and slung me into the wall, pinning me there. He licked his lips and looked me up and down before saying, "Me and you are gonna have some fun."
