I watch as Athena pulls into the random gas station, hearing the gravel getting thrown up under the tires as she sticks her neck out a bit over the wheel to see more clearly what she was doing.
Or to just avoid looking at me like she's been doing.
As she pulls up to the pump, being one of the few cars here she seems to freeze just as her hands were about to lift off the wheel.
"What-" I try to ask her what was wrong, thinking she maybe saw something and that's why she froze but she cut me off.
"We have no way of turning the car off to put gas." She speaks in a faint mumble, still not looking over to me as she drops her hands from the wheel and leans back in the driver's seat, arms going crossed as she doesn't hesitate to turn her head to look out the broken window right by the gas pump.
It was clear she didn't want to talk, and I wasn't going to make her. My eyes simply flicker over to the fuel gauge to see where the needle was and if we were actually going to need to find a way to shut the car off or if we would be good.
Surprisingly enough, we still had 3/4s of a tank. Which was far more surprising than anything else with how much gas we've been burning with how fast she was going earlier.
I guess this car was just good with gas.
"We're fine on gas Athena." I say before flashing her another up and down glance. She still didn't look at me, just kept her arms crossed and hit her injured hand by tucking it under her arm on the opposite side like I haven't seen it.
I look away from her and down at my fully open black flannel, bringing my hands down to the last button as I push it through the small hole. I just repeat this quickly, up until I get to the last three buttons that I just leave undone.
