The roar of the engine drew the attention of the highschoolers spending their lunch hour outside.
Their relaxed figures tensed up or sat up straighter with a certain look settling on their faces.
I grimaced bitterly at the fragile concept of high school, of popularity and the hierarchy it builds on unachievable beauty standards. Everything is either built or destroyed by a simple event, rumor or lie. Kids are forced to grow up too fast; girls being shamed for acting any sort of way while boys are put on pedestals for treating other people like scum, and the unlucky rest are left in the dust feeling like outcasts for being themselves and humiliated because of what they do and don't enjoy.
And as I got off the bike and surveyed everyone, I couldn't help but wonder where they would all end up... The bullies working for the bullied, the populars buried underneath unattainable life expectations, the rebels changing the world piece by piece, the shamed and beaten down finally blooming and owning back their worth.
There were times where I wondered in which category I would have been caged in. But then I'd look over at Ajax and thank all my lucky stars to have him in my life to wipe out the useless stereotypes.
I glanced over at him as I heard him tsk, "Ah! How fun it is to be greeted with the usual whispers and stares. Bit boring and repetitive in my opinion, don't you think?"
"You don't say..." I mumbled, already regretting my decision to come back for lunch.
Throwing his arm over my shoulder, my tired body unconsciously leaned into his warmth, "Come on, ankle biter, let's go, you can sleep a little more comfortably inside."
Even though I nodded, my feet dragged as we walked closer to the entrance of the building. I closed my eyes, enjoying the small reprieve before I would inevitably be met with an onslaught of sound and shouts.
I cringed when Ajax busted open the door to feed his daily need of dramatics, I opened one eye to glare at him, "I think you've had enough with doors for today, bigfoot."
