I was warm. My body feeling relaxed even though I laid on an uncomfortable surface.I slowly opened my eyes and took in the unfamiliar room I found myself in. I could barely remember the details of what happened but the fact that I woke up in a hospital room tells me that something went horribly wrong.
A continuous beeping sound made me aware of a growing headache. I was looking for the source of the annoying sound when I suddenly noticed Aaron staring at me from his seat next to the hospital bed.
He smiled when he noticed me looking at him and whispered, his voice breaking the soft atmosphere, "Glad you're alright, man. You gave us all a scare, especially her." He finished nodding to my right side.
I tentatively turned my head and my heart melted as I watched Alessia hugging my whole arm while sleeping, her head nestled next to my chest.
I looked back at him as he added, "She wouldn't do anything until they gave her news about your condition. She just sat in a chair, staring at her hands. She didn't want to sleep even though she was exhausted, she wouldn't eat or drink, saying she would end up throwing up. And she hasn't let go since she has been allowed in here."
Glancing down at her, I couldn't stop my stomach from sinking as I thought about how she must have felt. How powerless and useless she must of thought of herself, I knew that because I would have felt the exact same if, by some horrible circumstance, I was in her place. She was my sister and I would simply break if something were to happen to her.
"Oh and-"
He was cut off by a groan, "Alright, no need to give him an hour by hour report either."
I smiled at her tired face but I couldn't stop my heart from breaking completely when I finally had a good look at her state. Her eyes were red and puffy, dried tears staining her pale cheeks and looking closer I could almost notice a few blood marks on her forehead.
I couldn't even nod back to Aaron as he left the room, guilt swarming my thoughts.
After a beat of silence, she broke eye contact and spoke up, "The doctor said you could have died. Not in those same words but I knew what he was trying to say. We almost lost you. He said the wound in itself wasn't the problem but what was on the blade. Apparently you were poisoned or drugged and that was what affected you the most. The blade went too deep, there was too much substance flowing in your system. The loss of blood, the drugs and the strain on your body were too much, and so you were almost dead." She paused, her eyes gazing at her hands, unaware of my burning stare. "You were almost dead when I found you on the floor, barely breathing."
