A.N this takes place during civil war, but Scarlett is with Colin (offed up timeline)

Chris 3rd pov
Almost all the time, when Scarlett intended to be funny, she wasn't. No point in lying. She told grandpa jokes, not even dad jokes. Grandpa.
But for some reason, Chris (Evans) always found himself belly laughing at them. Maybe it was the way she presented herself when telling them, or maybe Chris had a bad sense of humor. No one, not even Robert; who is a master at reading people, knows why.
So, he here he was, the Chris Evans, laughing so hard he can't even breathe. He was clutching his left breast, laughing like a bloody hyena.
"Colin told me that joke," Scarlett informed him once she caught her breath. Suddenly, Chris went stiff, his smile altered an ounce, but he quickly put it back up.
He started studying the blonde's face; how blissful she looked talking about her boyfriend, how happy she seemed. Happier than she ever was with him.
"Her scar," her head shot up from her coffee filled thermos.
"Yeah?"
"You're in love, aren't you?" he prayed her answer was 'no' but knew it was the complete opposite. He had to deal with the fact that the reason she came into work, practically skipping was because of that certain New Yorker guy. That the 'certain New Yorker Guy' was the person Scarlett would almost always talk about, and glow up when she did so. Not him. He could never live up to Colin Jost; he was funny, sweet, romantic, hot, plus he actually had the guts to ask Scarlett out. He was everything Chris wasn't.
"You know, I sure hope I am... otherwise I made a mistake in accepting his proposal" she looked Chris into his ocean eyes, awaiting a response.
"Y-you're engaged?"
"Look, I know you're not Colin's BIGGEST fan, and he gets on your nerves, no matter how hard you try to hide it." she confessed
"I-I do like him." Lie. That's all Chris seemed to be doing recently. Lying. Lying about Colin. Lying about where he was the previous night. Lying about 'being fine'. He hated lying to Scarlett, but if she knew his truth, the real thoughts going through his mind she would either a) Hate him, b) Think he's wuss or c) Laugh and agree with how he feels.
"Come on, Chrissy, I've known you, what, 15 years now? You may be a hell of an actor but I'm a better reader and trust me, you're an open book."
'Well, this book must have unreleased chapters, cause clearly you don't know what REALLY goes through my mind.' Chris said, mentally.
Deciding he had enough of Scarlett trying to get him to admit to it, he changed the subject.
"Congrats, blondie, really. I'm so happy for you. You deserve him." True. Finally, something true came out of his mouth.
She deserved the whole galaxy. That's a reason why he never asked her out; if she was worth the galaxy, why should she get him, when all he was, was a single star, surrounded by a whole lot of darkness?
"Thank you. Really. It would mean a lot to me if you came to the wedding, Evans. Especially considering you weren't able to stay through the whole of my wedding to Ryan." she was staring into his soul, trying her hardest to spot any emotion out of the ordinary.
But as she said: Chris is one hell of an actor.
"I'll try my very hardest." Lie, again. Well, half lie- he would try his hardest, just, try his hardest to NOT go.
He loves Scarlett, in more ways than one, and he does want to see her happy for the rest of her days, but the thing is, he can't take seeing her with him.

"God, Evans it's boiling in here, how the hell are you still wearing a sweater, it's 36°C out?!" Roberts sudden outburst made almost, the whole cast jump. Chris mentally cursed his friend, now everyone's eyes were on him. He hated this kind of attention!
"Comfort..." he tested out. Luckily, the answer seemed to satisfy the brunette man, so he didn't need to try to make a crazy, psychotic backstory about why sweaters bring him comfort. He saw Mark eye him suspiciously, though.
If this was what it was going to be like, he was in for one hell of a journey, one he wasn't sure he was up for...
