POETRUSICIt was Saturday afternoon and the Dead Poets had convened in the cave. Soft sunlight rippled through the opening, bringing in a lighter atmosphere as compared to the opposed stark black sky that contrasted the usual fire.
"Attaboy, Pittsie, inhale deeply." Charlie told Pitts, patting him on the back as his pipe began to smoke. The boys smoked grass Charlie had gotten a hold of. I sat next to Charlie and Ruby. Charlie's arm flung around me as he leaned back into the rock. Ruby and I sat, listening to the boys ridiculous conversation.
"My dad collects a lot of pipes. " Meeks spoke to the group. As they took drags the caved filled with smoke, creating a wall. I couldn't see Cameron, Meeks or Todd who sat across from me.
"Really? Mine's got thirty." Charlie told Meeks, taking a drag from his own pipe.
"Your parents collect pipes?" Pitts asked, leaning forward. "Oh, that's really interesting." He laughed. I rolled my eyes at their high, Pitts being effected the most. Beside Ruby, Knox sat, glumly. I nudged the brunettes shoulder and motioned to her brother. She let out a soft sigh before turning to him.
"Are you okay Knoxy?" She asked. He didn't respond, just stared at the floor, the pipe hanging loosely in his hands.
"Come on, Knox. Join in. " Charlie told his friend. "You two ladies." Charlie handed me his pipe, which I politely declined. I preferred to be clear minded.
"Yeah, Knox, we're from the government. We're here to help, man." Meeks mused, not helping Knox's melancholy state. Seeing as Knox was seriously upset, Charlie put down his pipe.
"What's wrong?" He asked.
"It's Chris." Pitts concluded, taking the centerfold Charlie had brought the first night out, and shoving it Knox's face. "Here's a picture of Chris for you." He waved it around, Knox letting out an exasperated sigh.
"Smoke that. Put that in your pipe and smoke it." Meeks told him.
"That's not funny. " Knox muttered. Pitts stilled waved the centerfold in the boys face. I snatched it from him, crumpling the naked lady into a ball. I tossed it a Pitts head, the boy showing me a scowl as it bounced off onto the floor.
"Leave him alone." I scolded Meeks and Pitts, who still laughed. I huffed as they ignored me, now using other methods to tease Knox.
"Knock it off. Smoke your pipes." Charlie now commanded. Coming to Knox and I's recuse. Pitts snorted;
"Defend your little girlfriend I get it." The boy said laxed. Charlie's lazy eyes widened from beside me, the others turning to stare at the of us.
"What?" Charlie asked, his voice croaking. I shook my head, trying to hide how red my face had gotten. Pitts laughed, coming to the realization.
"Your girlfriend! She's your girlfriend. Fucking finally." Pitts cackled like it was the funniest thing in the world. My face glowed red as I tried to sink into the shadows.
